Meet Cecilia Diaz of Must Be The Lashes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cecilia Diaz.

Cecilia, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
So if I had to start somewhere, like most awesome stories, it all started in a bar. Lol, I’ve been working in the service industry for well over 10 years. Bartending was the first job I ever got paid to do for being completely myself, I loved it. I had the opportunity to entertain, give advice, problem solve, book events, and create some delicious cocktails.

Naturally, I was devastated when the bar I called home suddenly closed down leaving me with no backup plan and Christmas is 2 weeks away. So as I vented to my Lash Artist while I was getting my fill, she told me she had started training other ladies to lash as well.

Long Story short, in fall of 2015, Must Be The Lashes was created. I have been happily running it for 3 years now while I obtained my degree in Organizational Communication from UTA. So don’t let anyone tell you that you have to decide between getting a degree or running a business, it can be done.

But like most great things, it will take sacrifices, you will miss out on bbq’s, you will miss birthday parties, and you will compromise time spent with loved ones. But it’s all temporary, and the juice is definitely worth the squeeze.

Today, I am still managing my business and also working in Downtown Dallas on the Events team at City Electric Supply. We are a family owned business with a google type company culture.

I was hired to manage, host, and entertain events my company requests with employees from our company that come from all over the world. I literally love my job, and I love that I have the freedom to do both on my own time.

Overall, has it been a relatively smooth road? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Lol, a smooth road? Not in the least, and I thank God for that every day. Trials and failures are the very events that shake us to our core, enough for us to look within ourselves to discover things we didn’t even know we possessed.

I had my daughter at 23; most people would say “that’s old enough,” but I was terrified. I was going to be responsible for this little human looking to me for all the answers when I myself felt like my life was a mess and wasn’t with someone I felt that I could count on.

Soon after she was born, I knew she deserved more from me. I enrolled back in school and started hustling as hard as I could, I was my daughter’s only option, so I had to succeed by any means. It would kill me sometimes when I would be at school all day only to come home, get ready and leave to work.

Knowing I wasn’t going to be the one putting her to bed or being the last one she saw before she closed her eyes. But I have to say it was all worth it, she tells me how proud of me she is and Celebrated with me when I was hired on at my new job. We are literally living the dream.

Please tell us about Must Be The Lashes.
I dabble in more than one thing, but my Lashing Company is one I’m most proud of. It was forged in the midst of opposition, and I think that’s why I’m most proud of it. I was in college student at the time and what I believe sets me apart from other lash artists was that I never set my prices higher than something I myself wouldn’t pay for.

Not dogging anyone who does, it was just always something I felt strongly about. I even give a student discount because I know the struggle is REAL! I’ve lived it. So what is a lash artist? I apply temporary eyelash extensions to the client’s natural lashes. The process itself is very tedious and takes anywhere from an hour and a half to two hours to apply.

The reason being is that I have to go in and isolate each individual lash and apply the extensions to ensure healthy new growth. Ultimately, at the end of the day, I love getting to see all the beautiful ladies faces light up when they see their lashes. It’s pure magic to me. Increasing self-confidence one set of lashes at a time.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Stop procrastinating. Quit making it harder on yourself by putting things off for tomorrow that you can do today.

Lastly, stop being so scared. Take that trip, talk to that boy, move to that new state, and just don’t live in regret!
