Meet Chakina Watkins of Next Level Cosmetology for Kids

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chakina Watkins.

Hi Chakina, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I have been a cosmetologist since birth lol. I started doing hair in my kitchen at just 10 years old. So, I thought why not pour into the children who have a flare for entrepreneurship. After all we are born with talent, but entrepreneurs are made. I have accomplished some extraordinary things. I made history as the first professor of cosmetology for Tarrant County College. I am a two-time number one international bestselling author on Amazon in self-help, codependency, and motivation, for my book Girl, Hold Your Own Damn Purse. The list goes on and on. More importantly, I love my husband of 15 years, and our only child Harleigh. I love what I do, and my passion allows me to empower my community.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As I stated before I started this Journey in cosmetology at a very young age. I thought about how much further I’d be if I had a professional to guide me. That’s when I had the idea to start Next Level Cosmetology for Kids. I was supposed to start the program over a year ago. However, at the time the program was launching I was hospitalized due to fat necrosis for a month. I did not give up on my dream though. I got better, I got healthy and then I hit the gas to launch Next Level Cosmetology for Kids the following year. I am still seeking funding for the program. I would love for every child to be able to attend Next Level Cosmetology for Kids completely free.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Next Level Cosmetology for Kids is the first of its kind and there is nothing like it. NLCK Introduces students to entrepreneurship, mental health, self-esteem, and community with a focus in the field of cosmetology for kids ages 8-17. This program was launched to help future entrepreneurs start now as children. My partner Councilman Chris Nettles and I use our platforms to help build kids self-confidence by teaching them business ownership, mentorship, hands-on training, mental health, self-care, and creating opportunities for them that they wouldn’t otherwise have access to. I am also excited about our second location at LVTRise! We started there this October and the class is already full. If you would like to partner with NLCK, donate, or bring the program to your neighborhood, school .etc please contact me.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up I was a very creative kid and an entrepreneur. I was always doing things that empowered people around me. I was doing hair and taking clients in my parent’s kitchen by age 10. That is why Next Level Cosmetology for Kids is so near to me.
