Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Whalen.
Chris, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always been into creating any art. In middle school, I did many animations and short films. Outside of college with my first job with a watch company I got into photography. Teaming with the Art Director, we created advertisements for each new timepiece. Learning layouts and more Photoshop than what I already knew. After leaving, I became obsessed with fashion. Making my way shooting with models for fun. Overtime, I came across many excellent clients and learned multiple efficient ways to do shoots.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Most struggles came from not doing the proper way to light or plan the shoot. I just dove in the beginning. Later my OCD kicked in & I detail each shoot from clothes to the concept. Unless the model has an idea, then we’ll expand upon what they want. If you want a smooth road, plan for your shoot whether it be video or photos. Make sure you have a Plan B just in case for any issue that may come up such as if a light bulb breaks or weather. Each road is tough, if it’s easy you don’t get to learn from your mistakes.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about cmwhalen – what should we know?
I specialize in fashion photography and editing. My style is known for very vibrant colors and alternative ideas. The proudest I am is to have multiple reliable models that built on professionalism and friendships we created. Shoots don’t need to be serious, you can always make it fun even shooting at 100 degrees. From others, I’m not quite sure but I hear I’m easy to work with and professional.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Persistence and professionalism. I was terrible when I began but kept practicing until I was confident in all aspects from planning to post work. Professionalism makes it easier to work with a client and get the shots y’all want to get. I constantly hear about other photographer being too flirty or just jerks. Nobody enjoys working within that environment and making tension on set.
