Meet Christina Puga

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christina Puga.

Hi Christina, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
As a single mother of two children on the Autism spectrum, I made a decision years ago to continue my education and obtain a (dual major) BA in Psychology and Sociology and proceeded to obtain my MSPL (Masters of Public Leadership). There is a need for advocacy, guidance, mentorship, public service and community leadership; in addressing and assessing the needs of our youth development in the Southern sector of Dallas. As I have my own mentor program (B.E.L.I.E.V.E), working with organizations in Dallas ISD schools and being a board member (NAF/AOHT/AOE),has provided an opportunity to be a resource, to be able to help develop structure, which is needed for academic, social-emotional, college and career placement.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road at all because you have to go through your “checks and balance” and sometimes revisit your priorities, and not changing your goal, but sometimes having to change your plan. At times, the unexpected can happen, more so specifically when raising and being a caregiver of a child who has disabilities, it can create limitations. During my undergraduate studies, my son was hospitalized and during my graduate studies, my brother passed. As I deal with struggles, as it may be the norm for most parents who have a child with disability, you really have to find the strength, know your purpose, live in your passion and continue to persevere.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I love being able to listen to others and what their goals are and to assist them and creating a plan to be successful. I specialize in facilitating and developing plans and programs so that our youth have education, experience, and exposure. I am most proud when I see the progress which takes patience, and because you have to be subjective, as my goal is to make sure that individuals take responsibility and accountability for their decisions. Their goal is to do the work and put forth the effort to be successful. What sets me apart from others is that I am consistent, and accessible which is a necessary element because it allows you to build a rapport and relationships.

What are your plans for the future?
You know if there is a saying “Make plans and watch God laugh at you.” Although that’s not biblical, a lot of times we set plans in motion and then we deal with extenuating circumstances and it doesn’t mean plans won’t happen, it merely means timing is the main factor. I’m really particular about energy and spirituality, and having your plans come to fruition takes faith, action, commitment and discipline. One of my goals is to continue my education and continue to build the B.E.L.I.E.V.E. Mentor Program.
