Today we’d like to introduce you to Christine Chen.
Christine, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Moth to Flame started during my time at McCombs Business School in Austin, TX 2010. I went to pursue my MBA and simultaneously started the production company. Since the beginning, we’ve completed a feature film, multiple short films, including a short film that was Academy qualified, and shot weddings, commercials, and events.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The first few years were difficult. I moved into my friend’s dining room after graduation to save money on rent so that I could bootstrap the entire operation. All the cash flow in the initial few years were tied into acquiring equipment and other resources to keep the film production running. We’ve had people come and go and the usual startup growth pains. Overall, it has been an upward climb. We are very blessed to be able to do what we love to do.
Please tell us about Moth to Flame.
Moth to Flame specializes in telling stories for companies and artists. We like to not take ourselves too seriously, as a result, a lot of our content is edgy and laced with humor. Because of my interest in marketing and startups, a lot of our clients have been in the Austin startup world and we have helped to launch products and services through crowdfunding campaigns and investor pitches. We remain very unique, never forgetting that we started this company to tell creative stories in our own bespoke way. I am proud that we consistently spend our time and resources on passion projects, such as short films to help hone our skills and keep us on track towards our ultimate dream of making movies and content with strong stories. I’m proud to have built an incredible team of talented individuals who are equally passionate about our vision.
I feel that most companies compromise their mission and goals over the years for economic gain. I believe that we have done the opposite and have in fact become clearer and clearer with our goals and mission. Everything that we choose to do is done with passion and love. Sometimes, this comes with the ultimate sacrifice on financial gain, but all of the people on this team are here to create and make stories that we believe in, to the best of our ability — staying true to “Ars Gratia Artis.”
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
One of my favorite memories is creating my first “commercial” in elementary school. It was my first foray in films. The goal was to create a commercial about science fiction novels. I made my little brother read a science fiction book and dance off of the screen doing the Macarena. It was pretty epic.
