Today we’d like to introduce you to Christopher Hughes.
Christopher, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
First off, hello! Thank you so much for taking the time to actually sit and read through my path to creating timeless photos, specifically when it comes to weddings. For me, it started when I built a solid relationship with our wedding photographer on our wedding day. My wife and I were ushered into one of the most meaningful friendships of my lifetime, yet he was a ‘vendor’, and that spoke volumes to me.
As I had sort of messed around with photography as a hobby before, I knew my way around a camera and thought to myself, “It would be really cool if I could serve other people in this way,” and that’s what I’ve set out to do. Fortunately, as of today, I’ve been able to establish great relationships while shooting weddings and serving couples in a fashion that not many other vendors get to on the most important day of their lives.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Oh, absolutely not! I’d say one of the biggest struggles is defining your style and finding a way to set yourself apart, as with most businesses. Dallas Fort Worth is already fairly saturated with photographers as it, so it’s incredibly difficult to break into, but nowhere near impossible. Then, of course, doubt, despair, comparison (as is extremely common among creatives), and so many other self-sabotaging qualities begin to surface when you’re starting out. As long as you push through it and persevere, the world is your oyster!
We’d love to hear more about your work.
My photography business is all about relationship, so with that being said, it’s always people first which is what I’m most proud of, hands down. I pride myself on loving people and loving people well.
I specialize in weddings because although I have had several inquiries and have shot maternity, family, and other genres of photography in the past, it’s not as interesting to me because there isn’t much time to build a relationship with them. Most of the time, for people getting married, it’s a months-long process, and I Love walking through that process with my couples every step of the way and saying, “I’m so excited for y’all. How can I help? What do you need from me? What vendors can I connect you with, and how can I continue to serve you guys?”
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would have jumped in sooner, absolutely. I think the problem with me is that I waited too long and was too timid at first. However, over the years, I’ve learned the importance of investing in myself and being confident in what I’m doing and why.
