Today we’d like to introduce you to Christy Blumenfeld.
Christy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
As the child of an artist and a builder, I knew at an early age I wanted to be an architect. I spent after school hours shadowing my aunt in her interior design firm or watching my mom teach drawing and weekends shadowing my dad while he constructed things. I was fortunate to attend Tulane School of Architecture and one of the few women who completed the rigorous program. I went on to study under Robbie Fusch for 10 years before opening my own residential firm in Dallas. Good luck has played a big part in my success. One great client has led to another and as a collaborator with these amazing clients we have created a brand that embodies classical timeless residences.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest struggle is being a woman in a man’s construction world. My goal during construction is to facilitate the execution of the documents in budget and on time. It’s a balancing act. Both the builder and home owner are your partners. There is always a power struggle. As a woman, it becomes difficult at the site to tactfully but directly request the drawings are followed to the letter.
There is always room for interpretation involving the method of construction. Sometimes I feel more like a psychologist than an architect because the best projects are the ones where there is a meeting of the minds.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Blume Architecture – what should we know?
Blume Architecture is a high end residential firm. We specialize in classical architecture.
What I mean by this is that our projects are rooted in historical precedence. We study the past and endeavor to make each project have roots linking it back to a time and place. For instance, we might design an Italian villa but it will be simplified on the exterior thru minimal carving and pared down detailing if the client wants a more modern feel. I am proud that our projects are standing the test of time. We focus on the sun, wind and light and the premise that all buildings should have a historical connection to classical architecture. We are different because I’m a woman and we feel how a home should function. We layer function on top of form equally. Great homes embody the essence of the owner and we focus on making each residence reflect the owner’s tastes style and personality.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I feel being able to really listen to the client and talk thru their needs and desires sets us apart.
