Today we’d like to introduce you to Colton Thigpen and Kyler Brown.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Day By Day Apparel started off with the creative and inspiring t-shirt samples that Colton came up with and posted to his social media account. Not only were these samples generating a lot of attention because of Colton’s popularity but they represented the local Dallas vibe, and they were raw ideas motivated by his struggle at the time. Colton was fighting the battle of addiction to prescription drugs mixed with depression related to uncertainty with his future and career. He always had the entrepreneur spirit and couldn’t see an immediate commitment to the 9-5 office job. His interest in street-wear and always having a sharp appearance led him to the initial idea of making clothing and t-shirt samples. I (Kyler) had finished school around the time Colton had posted these to his social media account. I was also inspired by the idea of being self-employed and knew I wanted to start something that mattered and could influence others with the positive lifestyle I was envisioning. Colton and I grew up together and had always been great friends so I jumped at the idea when I saw where he was headed.
Going through college, I had also seen some negative effects of addiction to many of my friends and knew that it was definitely a battle to be fought. After reaching out to Colton, we instantly hit it off and started working on a plan to create stylish street-wear while building a brand around a positive lifestyle. Day By Day Apparel is all about taking life one day at a time and living in the moment. Not dwelling on the past or worrying about tomorrow, but focusing on the here and the now. We have came a long way, and turned a couple of t-shirt designs into a self-sufficient clothing company that creates original apparel, along with partnering and providing print work and support for other local, upcoming companies.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has been a bit of a roller coaster. Being in an area with so many good resources has helped a lot. We also had the idea of taking our time and building a brand from the start, so we didn’t feel too much pressure to compare ourselves to existing clothing companies. Of course, we had a few struggles starting up. We started the company under our own financial support, without any external investments and that led to some limitations. Early on, we were having much of our inventory made for us, and one of our t-shirt printers just up and disappeared one day, without any heads up. After that, we decided to learn how to print and produce all of our products on our own. Other than business related struggles, we had some personal issues come up during the first couple of years. Colton knew he had to address his problem with addiction, and decided to take some time off and check in to a rehabilitation facility out of town. This made it tough to communicate and work together for a while, which is how we always worked best. After overcoming some of these personal battles, it increased our drive to make our business even more into a lifestyle that inspires others who can relate to some of these struggles life can bring.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are a clothing company that inspires. We screen-print and press our products ourselves. We are known for our original and hand screened work along with our transparent and positive energy. We are proud of our simplistic but recognizable logos. Something that sets us apart is our Diamond Day By Day logo for our company which is our trademark and staple for our brand.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Dallas is a great city for start-up companies. There are so many resources and ambitious people who are willing to share their experience with anyone starting out. For businesses like ours, we’ve seen a lot of growth in local vendor shows, art shows, and many pop-up like events. We have received so much local support which is a huge motivation to keep pushing new designs and styles. Not only that but many people relate to our message and the idea that we can motivate others to promote their own positive lifestyle is amazing and that’s what we’re all about.
