Meet Cory Lacy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cory Lacy.

Cory, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Ever since a kid I’ve always loved singing and entertaining people. I grew up singing in my church choir and participating in talent shows at various schools I attended. At 13, I wrote my first song and I knew then this was my dream. I wanted to impact the world and tell my story through my music. Arriving to college is when I took my first shot at making music. I met a guy who was also a singer/songwriter and we decided to start a group. We started recording and even performed a couple of shows together. This time was exciting, but it wasn’t destined to last. We both ended up going our separate ways and I pretty much stopped pursuing my music dream. I then met a lovely lady, started dating, and in 2013 I got married. Not only did I get married, but I started the life of a family man. My marriage lasted a little three years and then I got divorced.

After this life-changing event, it gave me time to really reflect on what was important and what I wanted to do in life. That’s where my passion for music began to blossom again and the hunger returned. A little over two years later, now I’m active and pursuing my dreams with no intent to be sidetracked or interrupted again. I’ve performed at several venues around the Dallas and Deep Ellum area and plan to continue to grow my audience, even more, this year. Currently, I just released a hot new single called “You Can Do Better”. It’s available on most digital streaming platforms so go check it out. I also have my latest music video on Youtube called “I Love Ya”. I’m excited to show the world just what C.LACY has been working on and believe that any true fan of R&B will enjoy my music.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I won’t say it has been a smooth road, but I’ve managed. The music industry is very difficult and there’s a lot of dishonest and self-seeking people out there. You have to be wise about who you choose to work with and where you decide to spend your money. As an independent artist, this is a very expensive dream. Without being backed by a record label, an indie artist pays out of pocket for everything. These expenses range from studio time, beats, mixing/mastering, photos, clothing, music videos, renting locations, models, etc. I believe it’s one of the main reasons why a lot of people stop pursuing their dreams and give up. There is also another challenge that independent artist face and that’s getting your music in front of a bigger audience. The bottom line is that you have to be willing to go against all the odds to bet on yourself. After betting on yourself, now you need to attempt to stay relevant and consistent.

What else should we know about your work?  What do you specialize in?
As a musician, I specialize in writing and singing real R&B music. God has blessed me with the ability to tell stories through song and I love to share. What sets me apart is my authenticity. I write and sing about real life situations that I’ve been through or other circumstances that people can relate to.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I define success as the fulfillment you receive after completing or accomplishing a thing. One thing I always say is, “don’t allow another person to define what your level of success should look like”. The criteria that I judge my success off of is simple 1. Did I spend ample time brainstorming and planning the vision? 2. Was my full effort, time, and resources dedicated towards obtaining this goal? 3. Am I completely satisfied with the finished product? If my answer to these three questions are yes, then I count it as a success.
