Courtney, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have always loved cooking and baking and loved to make cakes, cupcakes, and other sweet treats for my family and friends. Although I went to school to be in education, I have always had a passion inside me to own my own bakery. As I moved through my career in education, I started baking for co-worker events such as retirements, birthdays, and baby showers, which lead me to start Cruz 2 Cupcakes & Treats. With having the ultimate dream of opening a store front, Cruz 2 Cupcakes & Treats is baking up special treats from our home, making each order from scratch and customizing it to match the celebration of our clients.
Has it been a smooth road?
I would say that the road has been fairly smooth, with some minor struggles that a small business faces. Operating a bakery as a home based business, there was a need to get all the permits required by the city of Fort Worth and the state of Texas. After getting these squared away, the major challenge was advertising on a small budget afforded to me as a new small business owner. I started on free sites such as Nextdoor and would pay for a few Facebook ads. I got a few new clients this way. As I continued to make sweet treats for my family, friends, co-works, and the new clients we had, I realized that the best advertising was the word of mouth from their experiences with Cruz 2 Cupcakes & Treats. When they had one of our gourmet and freshly baked cakes, cupcakes, cookies or cake balls at their celebrations, we were getting the positive word of mouth about our small business, leading to more clients and availability to accommodate more orders.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Cruz 2 Cupcakes & Treats story. Tell us more about the business.
Cruz 2 Cupcakes & Treats is a home based bakery specializing in gourmet and custom cakes, cupcakes, cookies, and cake balls. We make each order custom to what our clients are looking for, from color to match a celebration to a theme for a party. We make everything fresh to order, send pictures to the client to ensure the treat matches their vision, and always follow up with them to ensure their celebration went well and that their order was a success with their guest.
To date, what I am most proud of as being the owner of Cruz 2 Cupcakes & Treats are all the new people I am able to meet and the treats I am able to create for them and their celebrations. I enjoy seeing the pictures they send me after the celebration is over with the cake, cupcakes, cookies, or cake balls displayed and the great words that were spoken about the taste, look, and overall quality of the treat. These are the proudest moments to me as the baker and owner.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Over the next 5-10 years, I see Cruz 2 Cupcakes & Treats expanding into a store front and being able to take on more of our clients requests. This would include the hiring of new employees and having more availability for additional orders.
