Meet Courts Griner of Courts Griner Photography in Lake Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Courts Griner.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started out as a Graphic Design major but shortly after undergrad, I made the transition to more time following my love of photography. In 2007 I got a position at a Dallas auction company as a photo assistant. The position gave me extensive knowledge in catalog photography, the ins and outs of being a great assistant and studio workflow. I worked under top notch commercial photographers that gave me some very good real world experience. When I left this position, I began to get more and more regular client inquiries and I finally made the decision to go into business for myself. I focus more on promotional campaigns rather than new gear and it ended up helping get more clients. Facebook and a solid website were what really brought in new clients. When my wife and I bought our first house…it had a large upstairs area and that allowed me to utilize my studio experience while still being able to work on location for shoots.

Has it been a smooth road?
It certainly hasn’t been a smooth road, there are certain times of the year where my business is slower. Most of my portrait work is during the fall and winter. I have really hustle to break into new photographic areas and think outside the box when finding clients when times are slow. There are break downs in gear, competition with people buying their own cameras and not needing the work of professionals and the very challenging deed of finding my own style that is original from the sea of other photographers.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Courts Griner Photography – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
My business is Courts Griner Photography. The aim and focus is to capture beautiful, storytelling images for a variety of genres. I specialize mostly in portraiture and music photography covering live shows and doing promotional imagery for local bands. One of the things that I’m proud of as a company is not being tied down to just one genre, I look forward to having clients from subjects that are new and foreign. It keeps me on my toes and never makes my work boring. One of the things that sets me apart from others, other than experience, is the fact that I do have and utilize my background degree in art. I think that’s why working with musicians has worked out so well is due to the fact that they themselves are artists and working with an artist like me… the collaboration between photographer and client is constantly there. The other thing is that sets me apart that I am always working to get better. When I am not working… I am training. I am researching on better techniques, new locations and ways to bring amazing images to life.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
What I like this city (Dallas and the surrounding area) is that there are a lot of spots to use to photograph at and an abundance of different types of photographic clients. There is lots of opportunities here.
