Today we’d like to introduce you to Crespatrick De Los Reyes.
Crespatrick, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started my brand in 2017 in Los Angeles, CA. I was working as a denim designer for a start-up brand and worked in the factory a lot, managing the dry and wash process. I noticed many of the shrink blankets were getting discarded. I started taking these scraps and making garments out of them. 1 piece turned into another, turned into another which turned into friends and strangers noticing what I was doing. I then thought I could really turn this into something. So I started buying up these scrap pieces of denim from wash houses in Los Angeles and started creating. I love the aspect of story telling, especially through clothing. When someone connects to a piece beyond aesthetic, the shopping experience turns into somewhat of a spiritual moment and that person has found something more than clothing, they have really found an extension of themselves. That’s what I would love for people to experience when buying my pieces. I adopted the mentality of an Indy rapper. I create clothing “mixtapes”. They are very narrative driven, ranging from 2-5 pieces per mixtape. Each piece within it has its track title and own individual story. My wife and I moved to Dallas in October of 2018 and have carried my clothing over here and continue to grow it.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My road had been slow and steady, definitely the scenic route. I prefer slow growth to create something long lasting. The biggest challenge I have faced is marketing. I didn’t know how to get my stuff out there for people to discover. It’s been slow and steady, but word of mouth has been working well for me in the slow and steady growth.
Please tell us about your business
My brand uses upcycled denim shrink blankets as the fabric to tell stories. The aesthetic is very work wear inspired but with fashion forward Japanese silhouettes. It’s different but familiar. I love the fabric of denim and want to shine my light on it for people to see in other ways besides a trucker jacket or a standard five pocket jean.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Integrity. Always staying true to the roots of this brand, not trying to chase trends or money but always loving the art and craftsmanship of clothes making. A good product will always speak for itself and I’m trying to talk as little as possible.
