Today we’d like to introduce you to Beth Watson.
Beth, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am a mother of three amazing kids, two bonus kids, and a wife to an excellent husband! My story started out in Plano, TX where I attended and graduated from school. My childhood was phenomenal, but life took a turn during my teenage years. Due to my type ‘A’ personality and the pressure to be “perfect”, I developed an eating disorder. My eating disorder turned into drug use at the age of 17. I got the help I needed (due to having wonderful parents), but after graduating high school and starting college, I got involved with the wrong crowd again.
For four years, I battled with addiction. I wanted so badly to finish college, become a nurse, and help people. I have always wanted to help and inspire others, especially women. By the age of 21, I had two children under the age of two, and one on the way. I knew things had to change. I had to get out of the vicious cycle before my children were poorly affected.
After a huge wake-up call, I went home to my parent’s house and changed everything in my life that needed to change. I was fortunate to get out of an abusive relationship, begin a program of recovery, and start a fresh new life.
After much thought, prayer, and research, I decided I would follow my passion for cosmetology and inspiring people! This career path was perfect! What a better way to help women, men, and children discover their true inner and outer beauty! I wanted to be a breath of fresh air in the cosmetology industry and be an inspirational hair artist!
After attending cosmetology school at Salon Boutique Academy, I began building my business. I have worked in a suite, at a salon, and independently. I now work out of my own space and I am loving it! I will be starting at a high-end salon in Plano soon part-time as well. My goal is to inspire people and help them feel (and look) beautiful inside and out- starting with great hair! I offer my clients a positive uplifting environment where I will listen to their hair needs and wants.
Due to my traumatic past, I knew my salon would have to be a give-back salon! Crowned by Beth Watson currently donates monthly to Treasured Vessels Foundation [TVF]. TVF is a local nonprofit helping to stop the cycle of sex trafficking. When my clients book a service with me, they are also helping give back to the community!
I am so grateful for where I have ended up and I look forward to the bright future ahead!
Has it been a smooth road?
My road has been far from smooth (lol!). I truly believe, though, that every challenge I have encountered has been used to make me into a better person (and hairstylist!). Going back to school as a single mom with three young children was extremely overwhelming and difficult. I had no idea how I was going to pay for childcare, gas, etc. I was so grateful to receive assistance and benefits to help me along the way. I now serve as an advocate for single moms and a great resource to anyone trying to get on their feet!
Aside from the financial struggle and scheduling conflicts, I had a large number of internal conflicts as well. Starting in the industry, I expected it to be a piece of cake! I was used to being naturally talented at the things I tried. My confidence was totally shaken in the cosmetology industry. For the first time in a long time, I was really challenged.
At every challenge I faced (both in school and working in the field), I dug my heels in harder. I was so determined to let each stumbling block become a stepping stone. There were times when I thought this career path wasn’t for me… there were times I wanted to give up… but I had way too much determination in me to quit. I knew I was passionate about doing hair and I knew I was gifted in this area. I would not let a challenge get me down!
That being said, I still battle self-confidence here and there (who doesn’t!?). I have learned to let my faith be greater than my fear, to ask for help when needed, and to be at least 1% better than I was the day before. I know there will be challenges ahead as an advancing artist, but there is nothing that I can’t handle with God by my side!
We’d love to hear more about your work.
Crowned by Beth Watson is different in many ways. First of all, I set out to be an inspiring hair artist. I want to inspire women, men, and children to look and feel their personal best! I also have a give-back component at my salon! Each month, Crowned by Beth Watson donates to Treasured Vessels Foundation. I am so proud to be able to allow clients to give back as they take time for themselves! I specialize in color services- those are my absolute favorite! I have a reputation for doing excellent blonde work! I have been blonde most of my life so I understand the struggles most blondes face! I strive to be different by offering a positive environment, listening to my clients, and giving back to the community.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I think our city is excellent for a business like mine! There is tons of competition but there is also lots of opportunities! I would tell someone starting out to utilize their circles and spheres of influence first! Ask for referrals and recommendations- and network! Every stylist has something super special to offer. We are all unique and I think it so important to play on our strengths and not get caught up in trying to be like others. I would tell someone- “There is only one you! Be your best self, figure out what you love doing, market yourself, do great work, always do the next right thing, and your business will grow!” Oh, and the last question- how can our city improve? I think it would benefit everyone if our city would be less self-focused and think more of others around them… it could be as simple as getting off of our phones and smiling at someone.
