Meet Darrell and Tomi Jarrell of Jarrell Signature in West Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Darrell and Tomi Jarrell.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
We have been married for 26 years and six children, we are entrepreneurs at heart and love everything that has to do with marriage, family, small business and fun!!

Our vision from the very beginning of our journey was to love each other, love God and do family well. Starting out in corporate America, we both had an entrepreneurial spirit and knew someday we would develop something of our own. As newlyweds we launched out as homeowners in a 60 year old pier and beam home and it was there that Darrell learned how much he loved and understood the language of building and construction. We birthed our business just after the birth of our first child, starting off trying to supplement our income so that eventually we both could work from home.

We established Jarrell Construction in 1994 as a part-time remodeling company. The business began to grow and in 2001 we added home building to the business model. Working together as a team we began to see this as more than just a part time business and in 2003 we went from a part-time business to full-time General Contracting for major remodels and custom home construction. We chose not to follow the standard builder’s methods of spec home building in order to stay out of debt, so remodeling is a large part of our sustainability to this day.

Has it been a smooth road?
Our journey wasn’t easy with many detours in the road but each detour has led us back to building business and building family. It takes a great amount of teamwork and communication for a married couple to do business, life and family together, we had our ups and our downs, many challenges we might have bypassed but were brought to us due to business trials, But through it all we knew our love and friendship would sustain us no matter what hardship we faced. We can honestly say today our marriage is stronger because we chose each other whenever the storm hit.

Speaking of storms, when Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans, we took a timeout from our company and learned the value of building homes on paper, nail by nail and board by board as a flood insurance adjuster. It added to our value in budgeting and understanding the infrastructure of building and remodeling. In 2008 when the market fell we actually thrived sticking closely with the remodeling structure and had a few custom home building projects come our way. Because of these decisions we have been able to run a debt-free company.

In 2013 we became Jarrell Signature, Inc. and began taking on employees. Today, we are a family run business that finds value in doing life and building business together.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Jarrell Signature, Inc. story. Tell us more about the business.
Jarrell Signature, Inc., is a family of businesses created to cultivate the entrepreneurial spirit and to set up a legacy of business for future generations. We are known for our emphasis on family as our construction company is currently run by the father/daughter team of Darrell and Bethany and other members of the family working projects, marketing and such.

We are primarily a design-build contracting company that specializes in large remodel projects – from bath/kitchen remodels to home additions and outdoor living with a specialty in custom home building and light commercial finish out.

No matter what you want we can do it – walls can be moved, roofs raised and full suites added, we bring 25+ years of experience, an eye for quality and a team you feel comfortable having in your home.

As our family grew so did the business. Entrepreneurs at heart, we designed the business so our children could come on board and work part-time while going to school and give them time to learn some necessary skills along the way. Today, we value the entrepreneurial spirit in each of our children (and many of their friends) and are helping them launch out into doing their own things watching them build and develop the things they love. We have seen them begin to step out to include real estate photography, marketing development, and videography. Tomi is even stepping out and launching another business, soon to be revealed!

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The home building and remodeling will stay at a steady pace for the next 5-10 years due to the overwhelming growth of people in the area. Supply and demand will keep us in business for many more years and the trend to follow HGTV will keep people passionate about changing the look of their home to match the times.

We love seeing the trend to take something old and refurbish it to be something new. The current designs are moving from industrial/farmhouse toward a more modern/Scandinavian look. With each change in trend our business booms. Our designers keep us busy as people who have lived in their homes for 15 – 30 years are ready for something new.
