Today we’d like to introduce you to David Jordan.
David, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Five years ago, I was a homeless veteran and on the verge of committing suicide. I was lucky enough to have a family member help me out and brought me out here from Kentucky and helped me get back on my feet. Well, August of that year, I helped start a charity for homeless veterans. We Got Your Six was created 8-12-15, to help homeless veterans or those at risk of becoming homeless. But we don’t get government funding or financing, so I created Patriot Sandwich Company to be a revenue source for We Got Your Six.
The sandwich shop serves as a tribute to all five branches of the military while providing a unique dining experience and food. A portion of the proceeds will go to help fund some of the programs for We Get Your Six. The restaurant is decorated to honor all five branches and his pictures from different generations for each branch. The tables are all shadowboxes and have memorabilia inside. The menu also honors the military with being named after different things for the military.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been a very rough road. I opened my shop one month before Covid-19 hit, so you can imagine what that will do. We have been struggling to keep the shop running and operational, which plays back into my depression and anxiety, making me feel like a failure. Even though it has nothing directly to do with me. But, I know I have to maintain a positive attitude and fight to make it work, not only for me but for my employees.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Patriot Sandwich Company – what should we know?
Patriot Sandwich Company is a fully military-themed sandwich shop. We offer deli-style sandwiches. We cut our own meat and some of our cheeses. We make ten different sauces, eight for sandwiches and two different marinara sauces. We are known for how we have managed to honor all the military in our shop. Every veteran who walks into the shop is impressed with what I have managed to do with the shop. It’s an experience like no other experience. What sets us apart from our competition isn’t just the food, it’s the care we put into the food. We marinate our own roast beef and turkey, we cook it in house and we also cut our own meat. So we can give a fresher and healthier experience. We also make sure every guest feels comfortable at the shop and we make sure to visit every customer and make sure their food is good and help them realize that they aren’t just dollar signs to us. That we actually care about them as individuals.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I honestly can’t answer that. I think my dedication to my employees and customers has helped me push myself. My never say die attitude has also helped contribute. But I know not to quit and walk away because if you walk away every time you get challenged, you just learn to walk away, you don’t learn how to succeed. You can’t succeed without failure.
