Today we’d like to introduce you to Demetrius Smith.
Demetrius, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve always been around music since I was born due to my mom being a singer and my father being a musician. Originally from the Indiana / Chicago Area, my mother in her 5 boys moved to Texas where we bounced around from woman shelters to my Aunts House where we all stayed in one room. When it was bed time my mom would put on the radio (KLTY) which would take our minds off the situation we were in. After being able to get our own apartment through the help of the Government asst. programs we found ourselves at church just about everyday. My mom was the choir dir and me and my brothers found ourselves at all the rehearsals with the singers and musicians. At this time our father was absent in our lives but in and out when he could, so we found ourselves attached to a lot of the musicians that were in the band. I taught how to listen to every part of a song and understand the feeling of a song. I took that info and always attached myself to music. In school I was a big sports guy and was on the basketball team since Middle school all the way up to High school. In high school is where I really got serious in thinking I could do this for a living, where once before I saw it as a way to get girls attention…lol. Although I was in sports and practices, I would usually be somewhere writing songs while most of my friends would be out playing or hanging out. I even skipped my own Prom to be out on the road as a MD for a lot of gospel groups back in the day that traveled. From there I would find myself meeting a lot of big people and being a part of some dope studio sessions. The 1st person I meet was DR. Dre and his team and I was the youngest guy in the room where they taught me how to separate church music from every other genre out there. From there I got to shake hands with a lot more other Famous people and Great Producers.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Some of my struggles as a produce was not having my own spot to accomplish a lot of my own music. Other issues were not having the right connects to get my music heard. I was always blessed to be in the room full of great people but lack courage of speaking up on putting myself out there. Another obstacle would be that I always felt like and outsider due to my friends would be doing a lot more FUN activities while I was so caught up in music production.
Please tell us about A Bizzy Productions.
My productions business is like a baby to me where I always have to take care of no matter how I feel. I feel my business is unique because while a lot of other Productions out there produce and seek out productions that’s somewhat cookie cutter (not saying that’s a bad thing), I pride myself of having a different sound. Somewhat unique which some time can be a bad thing and other time can be what propels me forward in the music game. I’ve been in the studio room with the like of Kirk Franklin, Dr. Dre, Timbaland, BirdMan/ RICHGANG, Chrisette Michele and David & Tamela Man and a lot more. I’ve played for a lot of Artists as well. I play keys, Drums, Bass and KEYBASS. I’m also a songwriter and vocal coach. What sets me apart is that I produce to the Artist opposed to an Artist just picking from a Harddrive full of Music.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I have a lot of Favorite Memories from my childhood but one that I will never forget in My single mother of 5 boys would sit me and my bros down and make up songs in our living room under candle light due to not having enough money to pay the light bill and sometimes we would gathering the living room and pull out Pots and Pans for drums, sets up the couch pillows as Keyboards and play church and make up songs all night long. Thus is why I believe why I have big imagination when I make my music.
