Meet Don Hopkins of Don Hopkins Photography in San Antonio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Don Hopkins.

Don, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have always had a fondness for photography. When I was a child, my father had a Polaroid camera and frequently documented our family. As an adult, I am able to look back and appreciate those small moments that my dad, who was not a photographer, captured. Without really knowing it, this was my introduction to photography. How I decided I wanted to be a professional happened about ten years ago, when I photographed my friend’s band. This was only because they didn’t have a photographer, so I did it with another friend of mines “point and shoot” camera. After seeing the photos, I knew it was something I wanted to pursue. Over 10,000 pictures and youtube tutorials later, I have become published in a few different magazines and web articles, I have been awarded San Antonio photographer of the year in 2014 and have traveled for high-end clientele to photograph various campaigns.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey of mine has been the equivalent of hills and valleys. Lol, everything but a smooth road. I spent a long time doubting myself as a good photographer. I didn’t think my photos were very good. In fact, I quit photography three times in my career. Yes, it got that bad. However, I’ve always had good people around me who saw the value in my artistry even when I didn’t. I had a very encouraging wife who affirmed me in my craft and wouldn’t let me quit. So thankfully, I’m here and I’m here to stay.
