Today we’d like to introduce you to Dorcas Kemi Oladimeji.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Dorcas Kemi. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve been planning events since I was a teen. I was part of a local girls club in my community and I was on the planning committee to plan different events for teens in the area. As I got older, I found myself planning events for friends, family, church events and school events. I knew that I had a love for planning but never thought I could have an event planning business until I planned my own wedding in 2012. I planned a 500 guest count, two-day wedding on my own and hired a day of coordinator to execute my vision and plans! After my wedding, I continued to help friends and family plan their events and still did not start my business until my uncle hinted that I should start my business. I began the process of starting my business, but that came to a halt when I moved from New Jersey to Texas in 2013.
However, by the end of 2015, I became a certified wedding and event planner. While pursuing my wedding planning certification, I worked as an event coordinator and event assistant at a venue and for another wedding planning company. In August 2016, I successfully launched Kemistic Weddings and Events.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not always been a smooth road! I was ready to launch my business in New Jersey and knew most of the vendors in that area. Moving to a brand new state, not knowing anyone was rough. At the same time, I was also pregnant with my first child and that also halted my launch. After successfully planning and coordinating weddings and events, I got pregnant again! I thought having two kids, a full-time job and business wouldn’t be so bad but I was wrong. I decided to take some time off and focus on finding a family work balance.
Taking time off has allowed me to reflect on how I want my business to grow and some new exciting projects I’ll be introducing soon!
