Today we’d like to introduce you to E’Lyn Taylor.
E’Lyn, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My passion in helping others started at a very young age working in the church and assisting my family in mission work around the community. My Grandfather instilled in me “Love is no good unless you give it away” and I practice that daily. My interest in communications grew more in high school helping produce our daily news and reading.
After graduating high school, I majored in Radio/TV at Texas Wesleyan University and later transferred to Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX. Media and communication by that time was second nature. I studied Journalism with a minor in Sports Management at SMU while working for our digital newspaper as the Photo Editor and then transitioning as the Sports Editor. During my time in college, I had the opportunity to intern for Texas Rangers Radio, CBS 11, Super Bowl XLV and Jordan Brand during the NBA All Star Weekend. I worked in news for a little while in Lake Charles, LA after graduating and decided to venture more in a field where I can be hands on serving others while making and difference. From working as a University Admissions Counselor to taking a bold step moving to Atlanta to become a flight attendant, I can honestly say that I have tapped into every field I’ve dreamed of doing and loved every moment.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. After a few months in my dream career, I realize that was something I didn’t quite enjoy anymore. It was heartbreaking and scary since I prepared for it my entire college career.
Thankfully, I have a supportive family who embraced change and let me make mistakes with no judgment.
I think it’s important for college grads and my peers to know, it’s ok if you don’t pursue the career you studied for. Whatever you do, make sure it fulfills your purpose and makes you happy at the end of the day.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with E.S.S.M. – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
Now that I’m more settled in my career working in investment banking, I’m able to turn my first love dealing with communications into a passion project/side hustle. My blossoming business is called E.S.S.M. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do but never had the courage to just simply start. During the turn of recent events, I realized small business owners are needing social media as a necessary tool to keep their business thriving. Since a handful of business owners and entrepreneurs are not social media savvy and/or lack the time or resources, that is where my services come into play. My company manages the businesses’ social platforms and adds social engagements to help increase traction and sales. This project not only allows me to be a student of the forever changing social climate but also produces content to help others thrive to their fullest potential.
I’m proud that I took a leap of faith to launch something I’m passionate about. At times I tend to be an overthinker and end up thinking my way out of a good idea. At this point in my life, I have more faith than fear. So now I just ask myself, what’s the worst that could happen?
What sets me apart from others is that my business serves a bigger audience that is now realizing due to recent events, it’s ok to want help. I also have a customized approach to each business I serve, realizing everyone does not have the same wants or needs to promote their business. That is why I use the consultation to see if it’s a good fit for both parties and to brainstorm ideas for social content.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
My plans for the future is to continue to grow my business to serve different platforms and a bigger audience. Also, provide opportunities to high school and college students to start their own social management business. I will forever be a learner about the forever changing social world.
