Meet Elizabeth Hernandez of Backstage Makeup Professionals in North Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Hernandez.

Elizabeth, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My journey started when one of my best friends, Vanessa, gave me my very first makeup pallet at 15 I was hooked! MYSPACE was the social media of choice during my high school years, so makeup tutorials were NOTHING like they are today. Luckily, that did not stop me from constantly searching for new techniques and whatever I found I would immediately try on myself. I also did make up for several of my friends for school dances so that gave me an opportunity to experiment and practice my skills. I was an art kid, so I used different colors on myself and still do today.

Several years after high school I met my husband, had three kids, and tried my hand at different career opportunities. At my last job, I worked twelve plus hours a day on most days of the week. I was missing out on so much family time, yet I had to help provide to help make ends meet. I felt stuck and decided to continue with the long hours.

Fast forward to a year and a half ago. I had unfortunately lost my job with Medicaid. I went into resume mode and after applying and interviewing at numerous places, I noticed that nothing was a good fit for me. Although I had ample experience in that field of work, the jobs that were available were going to require that I stay past the normal eight-hour days which in turn meant less family time. That was not a cycle I wanted to continue. I began toying with the idea of doing make-up part-time. I found a few people that needed my services and began to receive some referrals. As I worked on these clients and saw how excited they were with my work, I decided to take leap and decided to go full time! I created my pages on Facebook and Instagram and started asking friends to model makeup and hair looks. That is when Backstage contacted me about makeup classes and what they had to offer. I completed my course, I tested successfully into Backstage with the Owner/Creative Director, Leslie Hernandez, and she brought me on board as a freelance artist. After some time in that position, I was promoted to Senior Artist of Backstage.

So here I am, a little over a year and a half later. My work is being published in magazines, I am getting to meet some of the best people in the industry, and I am doing what I love without sacrificing as much time with my family. I have not felt this accomplished in a long time. None of this would have been possible without my spectacular mentor, Leslie Hernandez. She has created and nurtured a culture of women’s empowerment and a support system that you do not see every day. The entire Backstage team, in general, is amazing! Backstage was literally the foundation for making my dream come true! I could not be more grateful for the blessings Leslie and Backstage team have bestowed on me.

Has it been a smooth road?
It’s been a smoother transition than I thought. The hardest part is juggling the scattered schedule and last-minute appointments with three kids. Thankfully I have the support of my husband and family! Especially my sister in law who has been so helpful with keeping my kids weekend schedules running when both my husband and I are working.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Backstage Makeup Professionals – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
It’s my home, and there is no place like home! I will say, however, that I wish we were a little more fashion-forward and less conservative. I want to see Dallas take chances with their looks!
