Meet Ellie Harty of Accents

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ellie Harty.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Accents is a family business started by my mother & father Betsy & Peter Harty. My father started with Pier 1 as a store manager & buyer eventually opening his own import company, Accent Wholesale.

My mother opened her store in Cleburne more than 35 years ago primarily as an outlet to sell damaged items or seconds from our wholesale company. Over the years she turned it into one of the areas best home décor, furniture & gift stores with locations in Cleburne, Granbury & Burleson.

Although the Cleburne store closed after the death of my father, the Burleson location is going strong & our warehouse in Keene is opening soon to retail sales. It is still a true family business, with my mother, younger brother Ben & I participating in various aspects of the company. My primary focus is the Burleson store.

Has it been a smooth road?
Of course, it hasn’t always been a smooth road, I know my parents put in lots of hours and hard work to make the business successful. Working in retail means that you work the holidays while everyone else is off.

Although it means giving up some things, we were lucky enough to be doing it together so that helps. I hope my brother & I can live up to the example set by my parents.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
We specialize in home décor, gifts, and furniture. Accents are known for our floral designs, we’ve even had one of our designers, Kristy Jones, win best floral designer. One of our most popular services is gift wrap.

Some people bring all of their Christmas gifts to be wrapped letting the gifts become part of their décor. We also do some crafting classes. We teach bow making, floral arranging and other fun things.

I think our personal approach is what sets us apart from others. We like to visit a lot & from time to time have customers come in just to chat, which we love!

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Burleson is a great town. This area is growing by leaps and bounds but still manages to keep the small town feel. The schools are good and the real estate market is booming! We are close enough to Dallas & Ft Worth for easy access to everything.

Burleson is a wonderful place to be with lots of community events in which companies can participate. We are super excited to be moving to Old Town Burleson this summer.

This area of town is really growing & we are hoping it’s going to give us a lot more opportunities to be active in the community. I would recommend anyone starting a business to participate in everything! It’s the best way to learn about your clients & advertise at the same time.
