Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily McClure.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Emily. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
After 10 years in the photography industry, I now specialize in Corporate & Family Photography. EMP started with weddings, apprenticing for two years, then babies in a hospital setting and everything in between before stepping out on my own! After six years of families, babies in the studio, children, events, and seniors, I decided to specialize, which has been an excellent decision!
When you begin a creative journey, you begin to learn what you love and where you want to specialize. I’m very thankful to be where I am today, continually learning, asking questions of those ahead of me in this industry and ready for the next session!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Smooth, no, worth it, absolutely yes! Thinking back to when I started, I had four kids 6 and under, a husband who worked long hours and the days weren’t smooth at all. I started my business with a financial gift from a family member as I had always used my apprentice’s gear prior to that.
My office setup was under the stairs closet in our Kansas house. It was tiny, but I could shut the little door and focus on my photos! The computer would get so hot I was afraid it would catch on fire!! However, I’m very thankful I just started! The kids have grown up in this business, my husband changed jobs and now my business is providing for our family in a great way! Taking a chance, believing in what God had allowed me to be good at, working when you’re tired & fabulous referrals are all keys to making this successful to date!
Emily Megan Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
EMP has two tiers which are Family & Corporate. I aim to take excellent care of my clients through customized Corporate work & beautiful Family Portraits.
For corporate content, I offer Headshots, Website Content, Exteriors/Interiors & Branding Sessions. I am known for putting clients at ease & loving meeting new people. We have a fabulous time relaxing, chatting, laughing & talking about everything. My goal is to have a positive & memorable time with every client in front of me. My business has allowed me the opportunity to meet some amazing people and that is what I am most proud of to date. Images will come and go, but people are what really matter to me.
What sets EM Corporate & EM Family apart? From start to finish, the process is streamlined & hopefully enjoyable! My goal is to assist my clients to know each step of the process to ensure we have a great time. Whether it be a family or a corporate session, each client receives time and energy with me and that makes the difference. You should really enjoy your photographer! Leveraging my photography knowledge with getting to know who you are, is huge. My job is to document people and my goal is to do that really well.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is a fluid term to me. For business purposes, it is achieving goals that I set in place. Daily, weekly, yearly goals help me stay focused and remind me of the truth of my business. For personal purposes, I hope it is how someone felt when they were with me. How they feel when they see their headshot on LinkedIn or in a marketing meeting.
Businesses use headshots everywhere, and I aim to have clients really enjoy their photo. How do they feel when they walk by their family photos in their home? Do they love them? Remind them of all the good? Then that is a success to me!
I follow a person in my industry, Peter Hurley, and he currently references #wakeupandgoals. Every day, just wake up, set goals for personal and the business arena. The criteria for myself for goals references the number of sessions, the financial bottom line & taking care of referrals is huge.
