Today we’d like to introduce you to Erin Cavenaugh.
Erin, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
When I graduated college, I started making YouTube videos in my free time, while trying to land a big corporate job. It wasn’t until I jumped into making these videos with the commitment of doing it regularly that I realized just how much I loved videography – there’s always something new to learn, ways to improve, and new ways to be creative with it. It’s YOURS. The corporate world scared me because I was afraid of becoming another cog in the machine, so I vowed to myself that I would never work a 9-5 no matter how much I struggled. Through YouTube, I met a music producer in Canada and traveled out of the country alone for the first time to vlog behind the scenes of a popular music festival there. I met more people in the industry, came home, quit my job, left my apartment in the city, and tagged along on a music tour around the world, making videos, taking photos, and falling in love with each new place and each new person that I saw.
Has it been a smooth road?
Being a digital nomad is hard, especially starting out. If I didn’t have money in savings, I wouldn’t have made it at first. It’s hard not knowing your next move sometimes and trusting in yourself to get you there. It’s also hard to meet genuine people, and given that my friends and family are scattered all over North America and Europe, I get lonely sometimes. Also, something people don’t understand. Work is 24/7. You have to think five steps ahead at all times. It’s not an ideal life for everyone, but I can’t get enough of it.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I specialize in short-form video production for brands and lifestyle photography. I like to dip my hand into different pots and challenge myself. Nightclub videography, family photos, hair salon promos, a fashion photoshoot in the middle of the desert? Why not!
Beyond that I work with a company that I do marketing and newsletter design for that I can do from anywhere in the world. Social media development/website design/content creation. When you’re a digital nomad having a variety of services is optimal. What can you offer online that people will pay for? I teach English online as a side hustle and I love it. But I still keep coming up with other crazy goals and ideas.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Dallas is an amazing city full of creatives and I would highly recommend coming here and finding people to collaborate with if you are just starting out. There is such a broad range of people in Dallas and as someone who craves constant change, that’s the main thing that draws me to this city over and over again.
