Meet Frederick Flores of Pair of Pirates in Far North Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Frederick Flores.

Frederick, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Our journey started one night after watching the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie in 2003. Unlike pirates in past movies, Captain Jack was funny, witty and charming. His personality seemed to be a good fit for me and our first attempt was a Pirates of the Caribbean party for Halloween.

In 2005, my wife’s daughter school was having a carnival with a pirate theme “Pirates of Prestonwood”. I ended up in charge of the haunted house. I went to work on using my skills from Halloween parties and created sets from Pirates of the Caribbean movie and the Disney ride. This was a huge success for us and the school.

Two of the new POTC movies came out in 2006 and 2007 as I continued to grow into my Captain Jack Character.

In 2009, I was in charge of the pirate haunted house at my son’s school. We used some of the same ideas as in 2005, but much improved. The sets were bigger, the props were better and I was fortunate to have some very talented helpers to pull this off. We also costumed and trained the “actors” to play their parts. I was able to talk my wife into portraying Elizabeth Swann (didn’t need much convincing) to help with my efforts. This was a turning point for us as we both fell into our roles beautifully. Our wardrobes and characters continued to grow as we visited many fairs and learning from each visit.

2010 was a successful year for us. We worked very hard on the voice, gestures and dialog of Captain Jack Sparrow and Elizabeth Swann. The details of our costumes were perfect. We were getting a reputation as Capt. Jack and Elizabeth everywhere we visited. We were stopped constantly for photos. The positive comments gave us both the encouragement that we were Captain Jack Sparrow and Elizabeth Swann. There was a tremendous feeling of bringing joy into their lives, especially the children. This feeling changed our lives, and we knew what our lives were destined to become. I remember one night I approached the idea of taking this to the next level and becoming entertainers. The more we talked and discussed it, the closer it became to a reality.

Early one morning, I remember getting out of bed and wrote my first Birthday party script. We worked on games, jokes and necessary items to put a successful party together. But no Pirate party would be complete without a swordfight. We went to fencing classes to learn the basics, and learned that it’s very different than swinging a sword. I watch several different movies, u tube (in slow motion) and learned how to choreograph a successful and entertaining sword fight. We also learned how to twist balloons to make swords and animals. For my birthday, my very supportive wife bought a domain name for us and the web page was developed. Practice, practice, practice…We were now ready

I remember being so nervous for our first Birthday party performance for a friend’s grandson. As the need fits, I have written scripts for different events including weddings, adult parties and renewal of vows. The last six years has been fantastic. We have performed in casinos, Dell computers, Birthday parties, corporate events, Mardi Gras, Capt. Jack Sparrows School for young pirates at the Texarkana fair, Parades and almost everything else. We have just completed our 168th performance. In costume about 68 days a year and travel about 12,000 miles a year.

As the name implies “Pair of Pirates” we perform as a team. We are one of the few couples in the U.S. that perform as Capt. Jack and Elizabeth Swann

Has it been a smooth road?
With any venture, there are obstacles and challenges. And this one had its share of them. First off, we are not actors, nor have we ever done any theatre. We were both very shy at that time and that was difficult to overcome. There are no lessons or training for any of this. We had to learn everything on our own, including how to sword fight. We have spent so much time rehearsing and training together that we complement each other in life and during our performances. I am fortunate to have such a partner.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
