Today we’d like to introduce you to Haley and Mary Alden Wilson.
Mary Alden loved working at Brown Bag Etc during college… and always mentioned that she would love to take over the business one day. That day came in Fall of 2017 when she was approached to take over the store. Mary Alden knew just the person she needed to be her business partner, her cousin, Haley. Together they have enjoyed Brown Bag Etc running and operating as a family-owned business.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Taking Brown Bag Etc from 1980 to 2017 has had some challenging moments. The computer system crashed and deleted all of the inventory. It wasn’t cloud based so the information was just gone. It took about 3 months to put all of the inventory (over 12,000 SKUs!!!) back into a cloud-based system.

Brown Bag Etc is a Fort Worth staple as the business has been around for nearly 40 years!!! We are a little shop that specializes in sorority and fraternity gifts and apparel. We also can do pretty much anything custom… shirts, buttons, embroidery, painting. You name it and we can make it your own with or without Greek letters on it.
What were you like growing up?
Mary Alden was a dancer all her life. She enjoyed working and dancing at her grandmother’s dance studio, Miss Persis Dance Studio of Arlington. You can still see her there sometimes tapping away or teaching the little ones a step ball change.
Haley has always had a bit of a competitive streak in her. She was always playing soccer and/or volleyball. This drive for competition absolutely continued as an adult as she plays in an adult kickball league now.
