Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Turner.
Taylor, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
The Hazen story began in 2002 when I began making jewelry simply for fun at the age of nine. Rather quickly, this hobby developed into a business after having my first trunk show in a store at the age of ten. By the age of 12, I was attending the Atlanta market where I began selling my handmade, one-of-a-kind creations to stores across the country. Throughout middle school, high school and college, I continued selling my jewelry to stores, and since graduating from Southern Methodist University in 2014, I have pursued Hazen full-time. Today, the Hazen line is represented in over 200 stores around the country and in our Hazen & Co. The flagship store located in the heart of Dallas, Texas. I continue to design each piece with semi-precious stones and work closely with our production team in Houston to create every piece with intricate craftsmanship and attention to detail.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Growth is never seamless, but it is the road bumps along the way that push us and make us stronger business owners, designers, friends, and overall people. As is the case in both growing up and growing a business, there are many moments when we are pushed outside of our comfort zones, however, these growth opportunities add new skill sets to our repertoires, so embrace them. I have also learned that it is essential to glean as much wisdom as possible from those who have traveled similar roads before us. Learn from their successes and mistakes and be proactive in applying those lessons to your business adventure. I am most grateful that the Hazen & Co. journey has been supported by dear, kind and encouraging people over the past 17 years. Their encouragement is undoubtedly the reason Hazen is where it is today!
Please tell us about Hazen & Co.
Hazen & Co. creates beautifully handmade and timeless women’s accessories. Our main focus is semi-precious jewelry but we also design and create barrettes and hair accessories. The most beloved of Hazen’s collections is the Classic Collection, which features an assortment of necklaces, bracelets, and earrings made of semiprecious materials. In the Spring of 2019, Hazen launched a bridal collection which caters to brides and their bridesmaids. Still today, I design each piece in every collection and make the sample by hand in my Dallas studio. From there, I work closely with my team of women in Houston, Texas to produce the product.
As a company, I am so very proud of my team and our continued effort to create the most beautiful, quality product and deliver it to our customers in a timely fashion and kind manner. So many elements go into creating a single piece of jewelry and presenting it to our customer, and I am continuously blown away by the Hazen team’s commitment to doing this well. The Hazen brand’s mission is to cultivate joyfully, inspired living and we strive to live this out daily.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Every twist and turn of the Hazen journey has led us to where we are today, and for that I am grateful. One thing I have learned is essential for growth is to hire competent and capable people early and set them up for success. Delegating is essential for growth, and by identifying areas where I am less qualified, I have been able to avoid investing my time too heavily in those areas. Instead, I focus on what I am strong at doing and hire trustworthy individuals for other responsibilities.
