Today we’d like to introduce you to Hira Ahmed.
Hira, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Initially, I had wanted to make people’s life better through healthcare, which was probably influenced by my culture and surroundings. I did my bachelors in Biology and my masters in Healthcare management. Although I enjoyed my career in healthcare, I was still missing the other part of me who finds joy in the small things and creating something beautiful out of nothing. Healthcare provided me the opportunity to help make people’s life healthier, but I really wanted to make the moments within their healthy lives to also be beautiful and filled with joy. Growing up, I was always good at arts and crafts and, loved creating recipes and baking in the kitchen with my grandmother. My friends called me “Desi Martha Stewart”. I was not only good at it, but I also had a passion for it. When I did event design and décor, I got in the zone and lost track of time. It didn’t matter if it was four in the morning or if I was creating something that I wasn’t going to get paid for, I loved doing it and seeing the results in the products as well as in the faces of the people I did it for. I am lucky to have a creative and entrepreneurial spirited husband who has been super supportive. He always believed you should do something that you are good at and be passionate about. You must have both to give your 100%. My healthcare job was good financially, but I did not devote all of me to it. I decided to start something that not only found me joy, but also brought joy to others, and launched Confetti and Confections.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Anytime you go off the path, the road will bumpy, but your journey will be more fulfilling. You will grow more, experience more, and live more. The business I am in has little margins given the amount of time you must spend on it. Also, with three kids and a husband who has his own co-working business, Venture X, it is hard to keep a balance. I always have an internal debate of taking on more event and décor clients or being a better wife and mother. I am sure this is a struggle for a lot of the entrepreneurial women out there. But with all the love and support my customers provide, it is always worth the ride. Also, the ride has been fun due to one of my closest friends and the kindest person I know, Sidra Syed. She has been a tremendous help and support in providing quality products and growing this business.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
