Today we’d like to introduce you to Houston Brown.
Houston, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Too intimidated by film, I decided not to peruse photography. Several years later when Digital started to become of age I told myself, “Ones and zeros, that I can do.” So I purchased my first camera, Olympus 3030. Started taking pictures at the lake every weekend to build what is now called a blog today. Then one thing led to another, and next I shot a few weddings, then started doing some portraits, Little bit of glamor then found myself shooting luxury real estate. My passion is composites because I really like working in Photoshop. It allows me to create images and scenes that do not exist. I can’t paint or draw, but I do know how to work with computers. Who knows where I will go from here.
Has it been a smooth road?
Photography was never intended to be my main source of income so for the most part it has been pretty smooth. I find myself getting more and more into video in addition to photography which has in turn led me to aerial video. So now I also do quite a bit of video for the ranch real estate market. Some of the biggest struggles is educating the client on the difference between a hobbyist’s work and a professional’s work. It is hard to press someone that last 10% of the way, from good enough to best.
So, let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Houston Brown Photography story. Tell us more about the business.
I am just a small one-man shop and have focused on the luxury real estate market. My passion for photography is more studio in fieldwork and combining those two types of images in composites. The challenge here is trying to find a market for such images. What sets me apart in the real estate market is that I focus on making luxury properties actually look luxurious as opposed to the run and gun shooting most photographers are doing.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Photography in general is changing all the time. It’s really hard to say with the advent I have cameras getting better and better all of the time. I don’t think you’re ever going to replace the creative high with any piece of machine. There will always be that part of photography which is more dependent on the human eye rather than how advance the piece of equipment is.
