Meet Ian Wells

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ian Wells.

Ian, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
So before all of this I played football. I was a corner for the Lions for a few years and blew my knee out. Dr Andrew and Dr Dold did my three surgeries. After trying to come back and play again my knee just couldn’t withstand the daily grind of playing anymore. Dr Dold after my last surgery said my knee isn’t in good shape still and if I did play, I’d need knee replacement by my 30’s. So, after coming to this conclusion I had to think about who I was outside of football. A question I didn’t want to have to answer for a long time. I’m very big in my faith so I finally realized football wasn’t the only way to use the gifts God blessed me with.

Last year, around this time my trainer and big bro a Melvin Sanders, the owner of Sandersfit, told me he thought I should be a trainer. I looked into it and got my certification in like two days. I started out training 2-3 people a couple times a week. I knew where I wanted to get to doing this in my head, but just knew it would take some time. Around the middle of Summer, I started training at another gym in Farmers Branch called Adapt, and I’m beyond grateful for Bo, the owner of Adapt, for giving me a chance and for being a part of the team! So, I stuck it out for a little bit and ended up getting a little busier towards the end of summer to where my busiest day of the week was five clients in a day. I never worried about the number of people I have. I just knew if I did my job well then, it’ll speak for itself no need to force it it’ll all come eventually. So eventually my clients brought friends, people start getting curious on social media and would hit me up. And a year later I’m sitting with a 20+ client-base. Wouldn’t be in this position without God mostly, and the people I had around me and in my corner to persevere and remind to not let today make me forget about what God said he would do, and that he did.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has been anything but smooth. While transitioning from football to the real world I had hit rock bottom… mentally, physically, and spiritually. Everybody goes through things and we’re all built different, so I’m not saying my struggles are worse or easier than someone else’s, but last summer was definitely the roughest time during my life.

Tell us more about the business.
I am a personal trainer. I train at two gyms; Sandersfit and Adapt. I work with everybody from kids to elderly, your everyday person to professional athletes. Every workout and every exercise are specifically tailored to each individual and their goals pertaining to fitness. I am a former NFL DB so I love working with athletes and being around the sport as best as I can.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I wouldn’t call it luck. I believe everything happens for a reason in order to line your steps up with how it’s supposed to play out. So, a closed door just means another door is open somewhere else, whether that be a job, school, or relationship. I normally tend to try to and handle everything internally on my own, and God finally brought me to my knees to where I had to call on him for help. Ever since I got baptized on my birthday last summer, I’ve dedicated my life to Christ thanks to my family at Shoreline City Church. They’ve been a big help in helping me along my spiritual journey and along with transitioning out of football. Being as busy as I am now, my faith along with things I’ve found to help me get through the days have helped me develop a routine to help keep my mind fresh and in a good vibe.
