Today we’d like to introduce you to Ivan Mijangos.
Hi Ivan, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
It started in high school, back in 2002. I was a sophomore coming from Los Angeles, CA to Garland, TX. I met a kid through my younger brother, who I had found out was a Dj. We became friends real quick and started hanging out at his place, where he would show me his set up. From time to time, I would go to his house and fool around, not knowing much but at Atleast to just try and get a feel a D the concept of being a Dj. I practiced all of my high school years and named myself “GYNETIK” when I was in my biology class. After high school and when I started clubbing, I started working as a promoter for AP RHINO. When I was at the peak of my limelight, I started getting closer to the DJs or Atleast stand behind them a D watch there techniques and take notes in my head. I would admire these guys cuz the selection of music, mixing, and them just hyping up the crowd was amazing to me and I knew I had to start buying equipment. The DJs I would take notes from are Jessy jam, Funk-e, one-touch, Daniel Boom & Exo.
Within time, I started buying my equipment Lil by Lil and practice at Atleast 2 hours a day. After I had enough courage and thought I had some kinda knowledge, I asked a promoter who was a friend of mine if I can dj at his spot. He already had a dj but said I could open the night for him. I didn’t care, I just wanted to try it. Yes, I was nervous and super lost cuz it’s a new experience. After the night, I knew I sucked so I just went home and kept practicing for another whole year. After that year of practice, I wanted to try it again. I started at a bar in Richardson, TX and became the resident dj for a whole year. After that year, I wanted to try something diff and started djing at PT’S gentlemen’s club & lipsticks. Worked at those locations for also a year. After that year, I went to clubs all over DALLAS. The last gig I recently did was on Thanksgiving night in DEEP Ellum, which was a good outcome being a holiday and all. I’m not only a club/bar dj but I also do private parties, weddings, sweet 15, and company parties.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s not always easy. Dj equipment is not cheap!! That’s why when DJs set a price, it’s not us to pocket it a D go on vacation. The money we make goes into new speakers, a new laptop with more room for music, music or videos, promos etc. Owners don’t see that and that’s a problem. There are times when you set a quote for someone and I’ll email them for a follow-up and get a reply with, “we found someone cheaper”. It sucks but ppl gotta eat.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My full-time job is as a driver. I am a driver for AMAZON. All I do is drive around and drop of packages. I’ve delivered from Irving to Rockwall… Garland to Melissa… My Dj life sometimes starts from Thurs – Sat.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Not yet… As a driver, I really don’t get close to ppl also the nightlife I stay in the Dj booth, so u can say my social distancing is “A-1.”
