Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamie Denholm.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
My first ever experience with photography was in high school. They had this great photography class with a killer dark room. I remember one of our first assignments was to make our own camera. Now that the world of Pinterest and Google are around, you can easily make one but when I was in school, it was all trial and error, and that is when my love of photography first started. To be able to understand how an image could be captured, then to take that image and develop it in a dark room was so remarkable to me. Fast forward to 2012 when my oldest son was born, I knew my cell phone camera wasn’t going to cut it for how I wanted to preserve these moments of my growing family’s life. I signed myself up for a beginners photography class and dove straight in to mastering the digital photography world. Since then, my husband and I now have two handsome boys, loads of photo albums and a thriving photography career I have always dreamed of.
Please tell us about your art.
As a family photographer, my number one goal is to capture memories that will freeze this moment in time for families. Some of my greatest memories are all captured on camera and I can honestly say that when I look at those photos, I feel as if I am back to that same place, at that same time. I can hear the laughter from my children’s wide smiles or smell that sweet new baby smell. A flood of emotions rush back into me and I am eternally grateful for a husband who pushed me to continue to grow and document our family. I want those same feelings to come over my clients when they view their images. During a session with me, you can expect all the fun and none of the stress. I feel like so many people have a stigma about how stressful family photos are and they really do not need to be. From the get-go, I strive for my clients to be comfortable. We are going to play, laugh and get those real moments in their life documented. I want to pull out those huge belly laughs that you can hear all over again for years to come the moment you look at that photo. I am merely there to help guide my clients into poses but I always highly encourage lots of hand-holding, twirling and silly faces. My biggest inspiration is my own family. As a mother, I want to remember how that little hand fit inside of mine, the roar of my children laughing and the love we all have for each other. I want all of that for my clients above anything else.
As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
I define success by how much emotion I can bring to my clients. I want my clients to open their galleries and feel the love of their family right there. The biggest compliment I can get is a call or text from my clients telling me how much they adore their photos. That is how I define my success. For me, it’s not about submitting my images for awards or winning photo contests. It is what raw emotions I can bring to my clients. If I can get their shy child to open up to me and get their real true smile, in my eyes, I did it. I created an image for a family that truly captures the essence of that child. We all know that cheesy fake smile our kids put on when we ask them to say cheese, but that’s not truly them. I want to create images that are true to my clients.
