Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamie Lynn Moreland.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jamie Lynn. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Growing up, I was always that kid with the camera. Even early on, I wanted to document everything to preserve the memories. I went through multiple rolls of film shooting every family vacation or school activity then spent hours making scrapbooks.
When my twins were born, I realized how important every moment was because the stages pass so quickly. One day they’re so tiny in your arms and then, suddenly, they’re sitting up, they’re running, they’re growing into amazing little people. I wanted to capture each moment and milestone so that I could remember everything.
I started learning photography at first just to document my own experience of motherhood, but pretty early into the process, I knew that I really wanted to capture these same kinds of memories for other moms as well. So I started off photographing friends and family, who referred their friends and family, and so on. The whole process has been very organic, which I believe comes from the fact that it’s rooted in simple, authentic passion for what I do.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The work is easy in the sense that I love being a photographer. I get to create a really special experience for my clients and make memories with them in a tangible way. For me, the biggest struggle early on was to push through the vulnerability and put myself out there creatively. I had to step outside my comfort zone to say, “I’m an artist, this is my work, and I want to turn my passion into a business.” But I learned that my own willingness to be vulnerable allows clients to be comfortable being open and connected and emotional in front of the camera, and that makes for the best photographs!
There is also the constant challenge that all working parents face, which is trying to maintain a balance between parenthood and professional life. Being a mom allows me to connect on a really intuitive level with my clients, but that dynamic is only possible if I’m also taking care of my own family and being present for them.
Please tell us more about your work. What do you do? What do you specialize in? What sets you apart from competition?
I specialize in portraiture that celebrates newborns, families, and motherhood. I love to capture moments of authentic beauty and connection that can remind you of exactly how you felt at a given time. My goal is to create an experience where motherhood and family are cherished and those special memories with your babies are frozen in time. I really love to make moms, in particular, feel special and confident. One of my favorite perks, which I offer for just this reason, is my Client Wardrobe, which is a carefully curated collection of dresses that photograph beautifully and are available to moms with every session.
What I’m most proud of professionally is that I have so many clients who come back for sessions beyond that first maternity or newborn shoot. I feel so privileged to document these families as they grow and to watch as their babies become children and reach milestones. And knowing you’re a part of how a family’s story is going to be passed down and remembered is really gratifying as an artist and as a person.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I’m starting to add family films to many of my portrait sessions! There is something so unique about capturing movement during these sessions – a child holding their new sibling, a mom snuggling her babies, a dad kissing his newborn – that offers a true reflection of you and your family. Photography will always be my main focus, but being able to capture both photos and video with my clients is very exciting!
