Meet Jason Block

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Block.

Jason, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Everything started for me in 2015, when I was doing a small remodel job in our previous home. I was building some floating shelves for the room and couldn’t believe how much I enjoyed the project. That turned in to a cornice over the window, a custom finish on the cabinets, and a rolling barn door for the entry. From that point on, everything snowballed into where I’m at today. I started with some cutting boards and pens, and that has evolved into many custom tables, chairs and shelving units. I’m hopeful things will continue to evolve and I can make this a true full time career as I learn and practice new techniques and build a larger clientele.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has certainly not been a smooth road, but I wouldn’t have progressed as much as I have without some roadblocks along the way. One specific example is a massive conference table that turned into a disaster. The wood that I sourced seemed nice and was perfect for the project. However, I didn’t know the supplier and didn’t have the tools to check the moisture content of the wood. A few weeks after delivery, I received a call from the client that the finish was flaking off and the wood was cracking. Turns out the wood was still wet and as it dried it shrunk, a LOT! I ended up building a new table top to replace the bad one and everything has been stable ever since. I still have some of that old ‘bad’ wood as a reminder of the lessons I learned. Pretty sure it’s dry enough to use now!!

J Block Designs – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
While JBD started with some rustic pieces, it has certainly morphed into a more modern aesthetic with simple clean lines and curves. I feel like this is where I am most proud. From starting with a DIY rustic style to a more polished and modern end product has been an amazing transformation. We still have a long way to go, but it’s been an awesome journey so far.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Easily the most credit goes to my wife and daughter. They have been extreme supporters from day one, from helping me set up at shows, to sharing my work with everyone they know. Our friend’s family have been a great support as well. I would also have to give credit to Arts Goggle, the annual festival put on by the Near Southside organization in Fort Worth. They allow small business and artists to show off their hard work in an amazing atmosphere. They are so supportive and an extremely affordable way to get my name out to the general public.

Last and certainly not least, I wouldn’t be anywhere without my fantastic clients. It really blows my mind that someone appreciates my work enough to continue coming back to me to build custom pieces for their design projects (thanks, Urbanology Designs) or to enhance their business location (RE:defined Coffee) or to make their house a home (thank you, Angelo P and Mary S)! I could go on and on with all the thank you.
