Today we’d like to introduce you to Jevon Lau.
Jevon, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Pickard USA started in 2007 as a custom Harley wheel manufacturer. I grew up in my family’s machine shop and decided to build my own custom bike around 2004. I designed and machined the majority of the parts on my first custom chopper, then started making parts for other local builders. In 07, I partnered with Mitch Pickard and we launched Pickard USA and released 25 wheel designs. There were some ups and downs in our industry, but we were able to grow the brand and make a name for ourselves with cutting edge 3D designs which we are known for. We also designed a triple tree (part of the front suspension) that revolutionized the industry. At that time, the only way to install a larger front wheel correctly was to cut and rake the frame, which voided the factory warranty. We designed a triple tree that was able to correct the front end geometry without cutting the frame and now it is the industry standard. In 2013 we began manufacturing fiberglass body parts for Harley baggers. We design and manufacture extended saddle bags, tank kits, fenders and a variety of fiberglass parts to customize your Harley. It’s been a wild ride the last 11 years, but we were able to carve out our niche in the market and contribute to our industry.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No it hasn’t… in the beginning we had all sorts of fitment issues with our wheels and we spent a lot of time re-engineering hubs until they fit like a factory wheel. Also, when we released our new triple tree, everyone said it couldn’t be done and we encountered a lot of resistance since it had never been done. We were able to prove it worked by making a video of me riding the harley on cruise control with no hands going 80mph down the highway. This proved the bike didn’t wobble at highway speeds with the new triple tree and larger front wheel WITHOUT cutting the frame to correct the front end geometry. Since that video, no one really questions if our product works or not!
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Pickard USA – what should we know?
Pickard USA is an aftermarket Harley parts manufacturer. We specialize in cnc machined parts and composite fiberglass body parts. We are known for our bolt on triple trees, which has changed the way our industry builds big wheel harley baggers. I would say this is what we are most proud of as well as manufacturing all parts in house. We do not source out our manufacturing like a lot of our competitors. We are a true made in Texas and American made product.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Being able to change with the trends. We design and manufacture our own products so we have complete control over quality and fitment, which is a huge benefit to our customers. Having full control of our manufacturing allows us to have faster lead times compared to our competitors that outsource their manufacturing.
