Today we’d like to introduce you to Jocelyn Patterson.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jocelyn. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
When my mom moved my younger siblings (3) and I here to Texas from Georgia, I already knew it would be tough on our family. Simply because we moved from a state we’d been in most of our lives to a whole new state with the rest of our family. I knew if I wanted something other than the basic needs I would have to get it on my own. I had always been into hair growing up. I actually learned how to braid just by watching my mom braid my hair in the mirror. So naturally it was the first thing I gravitated to when I decided I wanted to start “working” to make my own money. So at 16, and new to Texas I started posting on the beauty section on craigslist….yes craigslist I know, I don’t know why I thought it was safe or would work, but I did…..hoping someone would answer my ad. I would post saying ” Come to the best in the area $50 sew in book now”, and watch YouTube videos to try to learn how to actually do a sew in because at the time I only knew how to braid. Eventually I got my first client, and her hair wasn’t all that when I finished, but she looked in the mirror, gave me a hug, and thanked me. At that moment I knew I made her day and on top of that I made $50 and instantly I was hooked, then I kept taking clients….yup right in our living room at home. Once I graduated high school in 2012, I knew I wanted to go to cosmetology school and get my license. So I went for a few months….like 3 and absolutely loved it and right around the start of my fourth month I found out I was pregnant, which to me meant….girl you need to get a job… with benefits. So I dropped out of cosmetology school, but still did hair on the side from time to time, and started working. I went from a call center doing sales, to another call center as a life insurance agent, to finally working for an agent at State Farm. I only worked at State Farm for maybe a little over 6 months, and I got fired. It took that, and one of my coworkers there to say “Why won’t you just go back to hair school, that is what you love to do.” Two weeks later I enrolled into another cosmetology school, and got the rest of my hours….it took me two years to finish. But once I did I took that state board, and took a leap of faith and opened a salon suite-Glo Up Studio.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Absolutely Not. I think anytime you decide to follow a dream that you are unsure of taking a risk on, you’re going to end up going through a few obstacles. I had a baby along my journey, and almost let it stop me, but in all actuality my son has pushed me to do things I would have never thought to do. Such as opening my salon suite.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Glo Up Studio is where you come to get the Glo Up treatment. I like to make sure my clients get their treatment of course by providing a fab new look, but also by being that person that they can vent to so that once they leave they are ready to take on whatever comes their way. I provide a handful of different hair extension services and a few natural hair services as well. From Traditional sew ins, which are one of my favorites to do, and which I’m mighty good at might I add, to silk presses, to color, and a bunch of other services to pick from. I’m a weave whisperer meaning I specialize in making sure that I give you a natural, but glamorous look while using extensions, and making sure you leave my business with a smile. I’m known for my traditional sew ins with my infamous soft curls and because every look I create looks as if it’s growing from my client’s scalp. What I’m most proud of and what’s important to me is making sure each client not only receives the Glo Up treatment, but feels like a new woman, who can go out and get that job after she leaves or go out and get that date. I strive to give confidence to everyone who sits in my chair to do whatever it is that they want to do, and what better way to start then with a new look. So far I think I’m doing pretty good with doing that. What sets me apart from others is that I’m as real as they come. I give you that Georgia realness while you’re in my chair. I’m serious about my craft, but I have a fun time while doing it.
What were you like growing up?
Oh my goodness, I was shy still am, but when you got me out of it or if I was comfortable around you I’d be the one playing dress up, taking pictures, acting like I’m on a runway somewhere. I loved playing with my dolls doing their hair, cutting their hair, and of course playing in water while washing their hair. If I wasn’t doing that I’d be playing dress up and doing my own hair trying to imitate Brandy in Cinderella because my hair was always braided like hers was in the movie.
