Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Woy.
Jordan, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was in law school at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas when I started in the athlete agent business. I started working with Pete Incaviglia who was a baseball player with the Texas Rangers. I eventually got much more involved in the NFL and have since represented over 450 NFL players including: Jason Hatcher, Dan Bailey, Terrell Owens, Ray Crockett and Anthony Spencer.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The Athlete agent business is very cut throat and competitive. If you saw Jerry Maguire or Ballers on HBO with The Rock they are fairly accurate. Agents are recruiting young 22 year olds and it is a tough and can be a dirty business. There is a lot of client stealing that goes on so you always have to be working hard and close with your clients.
Please tell us about Woy Sports Group.
I am an attorney but I mainly negotiate contracts for my clients. I deal with the owners of the teams or their representative who negotiates for them. I negotiated the very first free agent contract in the NFL and that has been my specialty. I have made three players the highest paid in the NFL at their position through the free agency system. We also have a “Life beyond Football” division that sets up apart. We actually try to spend time helping our clients prepare for life and business when football ends.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
It was a lot of hard work and there are things about the business that would give me seconds doubts about entering it now. It has changed a lot over the last 12 years. However, you learn so much from the business. You have to wear three hats to be successful. First, you have to be a great salesman, second you have to be able to negotiate and wear your legal hat and finally you have to be able to manage someone’s career. They come to us with every request known to man.
