Today we’d like to introduce you to Jorge Veliz.
Jorge, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have a Computer and Engineering Degree and worked for about ten years in the corporate world. In 2013 I was laid off from the job that I had with Research in Motion, better known as BlackBerry. At that time, I knew it was time to do something for myself. I talk to my girlfriend now my wife about what I wanted to do. At first, I was asked if I was sure of what I was doing and if it was the path I wanted to take and to think about it. I’ve always been known as the person that if I want something, I won’t stop till I get.
Well, it was on September of 2013 that I went and purchased a van with a Carpet Cleaning Truck mount unit. I stared at the business by just cleaning carpets, mainly in a town called Providence Village. At times my mother or father would help me when I was overloaded. My wife now helped me with my business cards and with my logo for the business. Everything wasn’t easy at first. The van I purchased with the unit then started to have transmission issues. My wife and I quickly started to think about what to do as I had customers scheduled. We went and bought a trailer to get the unit installed in the trailer. It took a few days so it took a lot of rescheduling.
Then my carpet cleaning customers started to ask if I knew how to paint. Well back, when I went to college, I worked as a Supervisor for a Painting company and I learned a lot of what I know now. So I took on the challenge and started to do interior painting. Once again, my father would help me on his time off or would take days off to give me a hand. Then I hired my first employee but there were times when I couldn’t help much because I was getting calls for bids or just people asking what we could do. That’s when I hired my second employee. At that time, I was more about going out and getting more jobs and getting the materials for my guys. A few months later, the father decided he wanted to come and work for me. At that time, we were doing all kinds of interior and exterior remodeling. For example, we do Interior/Exterior painting, floor installations, concrete pours, full interior/exterior remodeling. Lawn care, Christmas light installs and much more.
During this time, we have been selected to be in the Top 3 businesses of Denton County. This was a great time for me as I had been asked many times if I was sure of what I was doing and this was a way of proving that when you want something, you just have to go for it. We also get asked to partake in neighborhood parades and school parades.
We fast forward to now and I currently count with six crew members. I can’t say I have done this alone because I’ve been blessed with a great crew. My wife also helps a lot in the back end of the business. She helps a lot with my marketing material and our crew members’ apparel.
Now in 2020, we are celebrating our 7th year as a business. We owe our seven years going strong to our customers and realtors that have trusted us with their projects. We have customers that have become friends and pretty much family. We also owe it to our families that we are away at times for long hours. I have been asked many times if I regret the choice I made of starting my business or if I would go back to the corporate world. My answer is no I don’t regret it at all and at this time I don’t have any plans on going back to the corporate world.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth world. There have been many challenges along the way. There is a lot of competition in the remodeling world and you have to set yourself apart from them by providing the best quality service. We always treat each home like if it was our own. I would say the biggest challenge would be to be able to accommodate the schedule to cover all your crew members, especially in the offseason. Work slow down for us but I always keep in mind that when we are super busy, my guys are always there for me so I have to be there for them when work is slow.
I would say another big challenge would be that at the time we have to miss important times or dates with our family. For example, when my second child was born, I had to go right to work once they were home. It wasn’t easy but it had to be done. For myself it’s also challenging to manage family time and work time because work time can consume me at times.
What better example of a hard time then the time we are going by now. I got scared when COVID first came out as we started to get cancellations. I had already spoken to my guys and told them that we may have to close for a couple of weeks. But once again, we are blessed with great customers. We started to get calls and text messages from past customers that they wanted to help us by keeping us busy. We are so grateful for that.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I would have to say my greatest memory from childhood would have to be when I was about 13 years old. I’ve always loved playing soccer and our team needed to raise money for our tournaments and apparel. We were told that we needed to stand by the supermarket and see who wanted to help. Well, it all goes back to going out there and getting what you want. I was with six other teammates and we deiced to go door to door and ask for the neighborhood to help us raise the money. We did a great job but then got in trouble by our coaches because we had been told not to do that but we weren’t having much luck with the people going in and out of the supermarket. But it was great because we gathered what we needed as a team and went on to win the tournament.
