Meet Jose May

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jose May.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I am a 34 yr. old self-taught artist born in Dallas…I’ve been drawing at a young age from what I can remember my older brothers and uncles were always drawing and carving so I was always around a creative environment…I grew up on hip-hop and watching beat street/hiphopflicks,yomtvraps with my brothers and sis…and eventually came across graffiti in the early 90s and seeing all the Graff around downtown and deepellum seeing Graff crews (ic,hd,dfw,)get up and doing big productions and cool murals…so I picked up a spray can and started doing my thing and haven’t stopped since and now I paint and create art for a living all over dfw and other city’s

Please tell us about your art.
My graffiti art name is “Skilz” (@Joe Skilz52) and I have been painting for 21 years. I enjoy painting fun, vibrant, and sometimes weird – pieces consisting of animals, people, etc. My main mediums are spray paint and acrylic paints with variation in style such as graffiti, modern, and contemporary.  Just as I was mentored by my peers, I want to show others there are no boundaries when creating your own style. Originality is key when developing your work, and I want to impact those who view my art to think outside the box. My inspiration stems from my experiences throughout my life – anything that I can interact and relate with, the world is my motivation. Till infinity.

What do you think about conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?
Network more become more competitive and do your research. Its always going to be hard for an artist that’s what drives us to keep creating…stay hungry. City should provide more wall space for artists to express them self and provide budget for supply’s and work and more art contests

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
You can see most of my mural work around deep ellum and on local businesses in the area on Elm St, Main St. commerce and Malcom X. Also, around dfw (free play Arlington, urbans tattoos, administer, bingboxdallas and across the country. To see my canvas work I have a location in oak cliff (1003 w.
