Meet Josh Massey of The Rail Yard Incubator

Today we’d like to introduce you to Josh Massey.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I had an appointment to the AirForce Academy that got rescinded when I suffered a sporting injury. My career in aviation brought us to Dallas just in time for Sept 11, 2001. As a way to earn a living, I learned construction while plying my aviation career until ultimately landing a job with American Airlines. Several times over the next decade, I was furloughed and ultimately made an exit from aviation to pursue real estate development focusing on historic buildings.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Do smooth roads exist? Layoffs, economic downturns, Covid. Life has proven to be a case study in timing, adaptability, and perseverance.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about The Rail Yard Incubator?
We facilitate the creation and development of culinary entrepreneurship through lower entry cost restaurant start-up, business mentorship, and relationship development for first-time owner/operators in Denison. Our goal is to populate the city with vetted food and beverage operations with strong regional reputation. The premise is that the area has significant hospitality talent that simply needs an opportunity to put their dreams into action. We have had two successful launches to date from within our incubator.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
There are many risks to business that are not covered in a business plan. Some of them sound crazy until they become reality. For a small business in any industry, a pandemic with a government-mandated shutdown was an unlikely line item on the risk profile but will now be mandatory. Our education was that some food types lend themselves naturally to carry out and delivery while others do not.
