Meet Josh Villa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Josh Villa.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
For me Dàtant begins as a personal journey. It was a cathartic way to try and move past many things including inner demons, heartbreak, addiction, and really just a way to do something creative and positive to distract myself from the outside world and the inner workings of my dark mind. I grew up in L.A. and was always very much a loaner as a kid. As I grew older though I began to dabble in substances which made me feel friendlier, and outgoing, however made me feel more isolated in the long run. I’ve never really felt like I belonged anywhere so I’ve always moved around and tried to keep people from getting too close to me. These travels lead me all sorts of different places but none more significant than Texas where I came at the end of 2009 only to experience the greatest heart ache and pain I have ever known over the years. Eventually I began using this pain to write and record where I met Sean Hill my drummer and engineer. These crazy experiences also lead me to the people I hold precious to me now and who I do not go anywhere without nor do I do anything without. They are Ella, Remy, Dave, Cas, and recently Stonie. I write all the music, including drum beats, bass lines etc. But the band is so spiritually together and so awesome that they all give a very important piece to the project. I don’t know what else to say…. I ramble a lot because I feel like my mind moves a million miles a minute.

Please tell us about your art.
I make music… I don’t know why anymore but I love it still…. I hate it now more than ever and yet I love and adore it so much I can’t breathe. My message is simple… We don’t really know what life is supposed to be or entail. Maybe there is a God maybe there isn’t…. Why not try to create mindless beauty and share it with one another? With real music you can’t lie nor can you put on masks. Music is everything and yet it may be nothing which makes it so spiritual. All people should know about my music is its mine and I love it… I share it with you and hope you take something beautiful from it.

As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
Money is common…. There is more money in the world than you’ll ever need so why chase something so common? Chase what seems impossible and beautiful and the money will come if it’s meant to. Be smart as well. Don’t let people turn you around out of nowhere. Work hard and be diligent.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
