Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Martinez.
Hi Joshua, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started my business, Derly Design, in June 2020 after working for a couple different engineering firms over a nine-year span. I learned most of what I know about drafting, design, and metal fabrication at these firms. I eventually became comfortable enough with the knowledge I had to start my own drafting and design business. Despite this work being very technical, I never lost my passion for art. With that passion and my new knowledge of metal fabrication, I have been able to offer a completely different product/service through my company. In addition to drafting and design services, I also sell metal artwork which can be anything from custom trophies and plaques to signs and sculptures. Derly Design has been going strong for the past two years. With the typical ups and downs of running a small business, I have continued to see growth which has given me very high hopes for the future.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I would love to meet a small business owner that has had a completely smooth road with no struggles. There are struggles every day, some bigger than others, but when you wear many metaphorical hats (or all the hats), there is almost always something you are struggling with. Whether it is customer relations, billing, marketing, licensing, and then the actual work to get projects done by their deadlines. Every day can be challenging but how you handle it will determine the trajectory of your business. Embrace the struggle.
We’ve been impressed with Derly Design, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Primarily, Derly Design is a drafting and design business helping engineering firms, fabrication shops, and builders with anything from simple concept drawings and renderings to full fabrication blueprints using the latest CAD software. In addition to drafting and design, I also offer a variety of metal work. This can range from large projects that require several subcontractors, to smaller projects like metal signs and artwork. At this point, I may be best known for my custom trophies and plaques. I try to make these as unique as possible, something that the end recipient views not as a trophy, but as a piece of art, they are proud to display. I take pride in all the work I do, but it is especially gratifying to see customers happy with something that I not only designed but also built myself.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs, or other resources you think our readers should check out?
Because of the type of work I do, I can listen to podcasts throughout the day. A few of my favorites are the Jocko Podcast, The Tim Ferriss Show, and the Lex Fridman Podcast. The Jocko Podcast is hosted by former Navy SEAL commander Jocko Willink who now has a leadership consulting company. His shows vary between military history and leadership strategy and tactics. It has really changed how I interact with people in a work environment. Tim Ferriss and Lex Fridman fall into a similar category but with wider-ranging subject matter. All great motivational and informative podcasts.
