Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Parker.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Joshua. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am originally from Mobile, AL, and homeownership is all that I witnessed as a child. My parents owned their own home and after moving to Texas with my mother she wanted to purchase another home. At the age of 18, my FICO score and additional income were needed to obtain the new house, and I remember the day we went to the title company to sign the paperwork for her first home as a single mother. The look on my mother’s face was priceless and from that day forward I strived to put that smile on her face again.
The next hurdle that I attempted to leap over shortly after assisting my mother with becoming a homeowner was college. However, after attending college for two years and having a child my freshman year the journey began to feel like the impossible as providing for my daughter became my number one priority. Now overnight (it felt), I am a full-time father and college drop out trying to make ends met and I remember a conversation between myself and my mother’s new husband “Joshua, do you think you are doing something by staying in the house with your mother and your child? You’re not a man until you are able to take care of that child and own your own home”. Therefore two weeks later I reached out to a loan officer & realtor and within one month I found myself a new homeowner with two of my best friends and daughter all under one roof. (Running joke “three men & a baby”.
While living in my 1st official home for a few years, I got married, built my family and had the opportunity to mature and begin investing. As I invested in the real estate market, I began purchasing and remodeling homes and renting them as short term rental properties. I discovered my passion at that moment because every conversation that I held with family & friends, I would light up when discussing homeownership and how it is part of my belief that owning real estate is the foundation of “generational wealth”. Therefore, I thought it was time that I contribute back to society and my community by assisting others in their journey to building generational wealth.
I remembered how clueless I was when going through the home buying process and wanted to ensure that no one else got as discouraged as I did in the beginning due to a lack of information provided to make an informed decision. Therefore, I attended Real Estate school and began my journey of assisting as many people as I could with becoming homeowners. My purpose and passion are simply to help people with taking the first step down a journey that some would find terrifying, however, one of the most rewarding processes that they can take that will have a reward lasting many generations. A home represents a foundation, family fellowships, and consistency for many individuals and it is my mission to ensure that I can assist as many people as possible with embarking on the homeownership journey. Additionally, I have had the opportunity to give back to the community in other ways utilizing M.E.N (Men Empowerment Network), a company I started to assist young men in obtaining further education about being an active father. Encouraging and informing them that child support doesn’t equivalate to being a dad and that it is okay for men to come together for fellowship outside of sports to uplift one another and be the foundation for our communities.
Has it been a smooth road?
No, the road wasn’t always smooth as I didn’t finish college, some relationships were tested, and being a father was a new and unfamiliar journey. Additionally, along the way, I found that being too trusting may backfire and that everyone isn’t always in your corner. However, despite these setbacks, the journey was definitely worth traveling and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I am a realtor with Townview Realtors located in Duncanville. I specialize in residential real estate, apartment locating, & rental leases. The thing I am most proud of is what I also believe sets me apart from others. I am truly passionate about my profession & do not view it as a job, instead, I view it as my purpose that I am walking in and the ability to assist others with creating a foundation that their families will be able to add onto for generations.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
