Meet JR Gramstad of JRG Taxes in Richardson

Today we’d like to introduce you to JR Gramstad.

JR, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
In November 2015, I founded JRG Taxes. After preparing over 10,000 tax returns working for another accounting firm, I had the confidence to start my own practice.

Now my accounting firm has over 500 clients and we are preparing over 1,000 tax returns a year. Our firm really focuses on leveraging technology to help service all of our client’s accounting needs. We are very active online and have over 100+ 5-Star Reviews total on Facebook, Google, Thumbtack, and Yelp.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The transition from being an employee to a business owner has been challenging and rewarding. Launching a new business meant working mornings, days, nights, and weekends. There was just so many things to do in the very beginning that the day just never seemed long enough.

The first couple of months were definitely the hardest. I left my position at another Dallas accounting firm in November 2015 and immediately started JRG Taxes. It was a scary time professionally and personally. My wife and I had a one-year-old baby girl and another one on the way.

My first goal was to find a way to replace the income from my previous job. Thankfully, soon after I started JRG Taxes, I started acquiring more and more clients through referrals.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
JRG Taxes primarily focuses on helping individuals and businesses save money on taxes. We also provide accounting services for businesses such as payroll, business structures, consulting, and tax planning.

One thing that I really wanted JRG Taxes to be focused on was implementing the newest and best accounting practices and processes for my clients. A lot of clients tell me that doing something like payroll is costing them a lot of time and money.

Usually, there is a more cost effective and simpler way. I love being able to free up a small business owner to focus on more important things.

We also prepare hundreds of individual tax returns. Our clients come from all different types of industries and professions. Saving our clients time and money is our primary focus.

What were you like growing up?
I grew up in Waxahachie, Texas which is about 30 minutes south of Dallas. When I was a kid I played a lot of sports and I was always interested in numbers. My mom asked me to help figure out the family’s taxes when I was 13 and that was my first exposure to taxes.

After I graduated high school I completed my Bachelor’s Degree in Finance at the University of North Texas in Denton. Straight out of school I went to work in the financial industry. It didn’t quite feel like the right career for me. I ended up leaving my position and then found a position with a Dallas tax accounting firm.

Immediately I felt that tax and accounting was a great fit. After a year in accounting, I started going back to school during the night to get my Master’s Degree in Accounting – Taxation.
