Today we’d like to introduce you to Julia Lane.
Julia, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started at a young age loving cosmetics. My first time playing with an Urban Decay palette was in a study hall in 7th grade. I loved all of the colors and textures. When I started working, at least half of my paycheck would be spent at MAC cosmetics.
After high school, I immediately enrolled in cosmetology school at Toni & Guy Hairdressing Academy in Plano.
Following graduation, I was hired at a high-end salon. I realized hair was not my biggest passion and decided to give freelancing a shot.
Leaving the salon, I started working weddings doing hair and makeup for brides and their party. I met my business partner Lisa, through weddings. We eventually teamed up and started BB Wellington Artistry.
Lisa has been doing makeup professionally for 6 years. We bonded over of course makeup, being a dog mom and our love for SpongeBob.
We pride our business on creating a fun, friendly and customized experience for our brides and the bridal party.
Our mission is to provide a quality service that our brides will remember forever.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I believe in the saying “nothing good comes easy.” There have definitely been some hang-ups along the way.
For Lisa and I, we have had the struggle of finding the right place and where to fit in. Starting a business requires a lot of trial and error. Lisa and I were very fortunate to meet each other. It’s hard to find someone dependable, trustworthy and with a good work ethic.
It was the thought in the back of my mind “am I wasting my time.” Right out of hair school I was jumping from different salons and odd ball jobs. Along the way, you make connections. Social Media has definitely helped put our names out there.
One of my odd ball jobs was working for a wedding freelance company where I met Lisa. The owner of the company apparently closed the doors without giving any notice to her artists and stylists. This was a huge let down because this was right at the beginning of my career.
Needless to say I have had plenty of opportunities that have pushed me to give up my passion. I think at the end of the day it’s about seeing your end goal.
BB Wellington Artistry – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
BB Wellington Artistry focuses on a customized experience for all of our clients whether its senior portraits, family photos or our main focus, brides and their parties.
We specialize in hair styling, makeup, airbrush and individual lashes. We are known for our teamwork and our customer service.
Lisa and I work well as a team. We are quick to respond to clients and we’re very detailed with lifestyle questions to determine what will best suit our client. We also travel to on location cites to better assist our clients.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I think success is a happy clientele. Lisa and I both believe it’s not worth the money if our clients aren’t happy. The biggest satisfaction is seeing a big smile on our clients face and watching them pull out their phone to take a selfie.
