Today we’d like to introduce you to Julianne Schroeder.
Julianne, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
As a therapist, I’m obviously inclined to go back to my childhood and start there… I’m kidding, but not really… I promise I’ll keep it relatively brief.
My parents both modeled and valued being of service to others, and I am deeply appreciative of the ideals they instilled in me. Identifying as a natural “people person”, I have always known my future would involve helping others in some capacity. I refined my career aspirations as I witnessed struggles of those close to me, along with my own experiences.
Fast forward (quickly, please!) through those teenage years ridden of insecurity that nobody wants to revisit, to my college years. I was an Education major and realized the greatest teachers believed that students ultimately have the tools and knowledge within themselves to solve hard problems if given the opportunity to explore. Adopting that same philosophy, I felt drawn to the inner work and exploration that must happen for people to overcome various obstacles and succeed in the most challenging subject of all– life.
Speeding up to today, it’s 100% the truth when I say I wouldn’t be where I am in my business and life without the unending support & opportunities afforded from my support system. I frequently reflect on how blessed I am to have such incredible family, friends, mentors, and colleagues that have encouraged me in my moments of doubt and celebrated in my successes. I’m not minimizing the countless hours I pour into being the best therapist I can be, yet I can say without a doubt, it’s the people I have met that have made all the difference.
If there’s one thing I stand and live by, it’s the belief that connection with others get us through life, and because of my connections with invaluable people, I am where I am today. (Special shoutout to my work family as well! I am fortunate to share space with other talented therapists at EMPOWERED Counseling, LLC and White Rock Counseling, LLC).
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Life is far from perfect, I am far from perfect, and my journey in business has been far from perfect. I had never taken a business class in all of my schooling, and here I am a business owner. I’ve learned to not be above asking for help, and I’ve sought counsel from experts & colleagues who could guide me as well as researching & teaching myself. I’ve learned that I cannot do everything all at once, how important it is to limits to how much I work, and the value of taking calculated risks, and learning from mistakes.
Invariably I think all small business owners go through periods where they question if they can make it. In moments where anxiety and self-doubt creep up, I try to get out of my own way (choosing to let go of the ego, in psychological terms if you will). I think beyond myself, and believe that I am placed here for a reason. At the core, I trust that each moment unfolds as it should, even if I don’t always know why.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Julianne Schroeder Counseling – what should we know?
As a Licensed Professional Counselor & Registered Yoga Teacher, I help people mindfully create connection, compassion, and confidence through individual talk therapy, group therapy, workshops, speaking, and therapeutic yoga. I aim to help heal the mind, body, and soul with a holistic approach to facilitating growth and change.
My focused clinical training and experience counseling adolescents & adults has best equipped me to specialize in disordered eating/eating disorders, teenagers & twenty-somethings, perfectionism, those healing from unhealthy relationships, anxiety and depression, and clients seeking general emotional wellness.
At some point in time, we need someone to remind us of our inherent strength and ability as we navigate the inevitable trials we face by being human. I believe more than anything we all deserve acceptance and grace. We are all doing our best to figure out “how to do life”.
I speak from the heart because my heart is what drives what I do, and what I am most proud of. Of course, I believe in balance and find it necessary to factor the head and the heart in what I do in and out of the therapy room. I deem myself a life-long learner, practice continual self-awareness, and seek education on evidence-based approaches to use with clients.
I’ll end with this:
It can be so easy to be stuck in our heads THINKING about what we should or shouldn’t do, how we THINK we need to be (or not be) for others, leading us to unhealthy patterns & behaviors as a result of what we THINK will bring us happiness, love, and success. We do so much THINKING, sometimes forget to pay attention to how we truly FEEL about what we are doing, and then take action to align with desired feelings.
I aspire to create a balance between the head and the heart by mindfully connecting the mind and the body in talk and yoga therapy so others can live their life with connection, compassion, and confidence.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Compassion has been integral to my success; compassion for others, and myself as we are all learning how to do our best in any given moment. I draw a lot of my work on self-compassion, mindfulness, and reducing shame by gurus Dr. Kristen Neff, Dr. Christopher Germer, and Brene Brown. I am thankful I have learned how to harness the power of self-compassion to help me reach and surpass my goals, and love sharing that with others.
