Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaitlyn Kilpatrick.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Growing up, my two sisters and I were homeschooled and in 4-H (a youth development organization). This upbringing enabled us to travel often and take advantage of many new opportunities and learning experiences. My parents have always encouraged me to follow my passions, which were mostly art and technology related. I have dabbled in many aspects of the visual arts but was drawn more to photography as it was a way for me to use technology as well as express myself creatively. I began learning how to use a camera when I was 7 years old and I have been shooting ever since. Photography is one of the major project areas in 4-H, so I was able to be exposed to many opportunities learning from others, experiencing different techniques and even showcasing some of my work along the way. Like photography, my interest in film and TV production began early in life but has really evolved throughout my college years.
In May, I graduated from the University of North Texas, UNT, where I received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Radio/Television/Film and a minor in Photography. College allowed me to enhance my filmmaking knowledge and develop myself as an artist. At UNT, I was part of the UNT Short Film Club where I was a crewmember on many short films. After trying various production positions, I found that I enjoyed doing cinematography, gaffing, and art direction the best.
Over the last two years and more so recently, I have supported myself with freelance photography and videography. This has really been the first opportunity I have had to have the freedom to take photos the way I would like to and not for a class, contest or project. My clients seem to be pleased, so I must be doing something right! I intend on continuing this work, expanding my business as I continue to grow as an artist.
Please tell us about your art.
My work has grown and become more sophisticated as I’ve gotten older. I’ve been able to better define my own style. Through the years, my photography has evolved to combine aspects of cinematography, documentary, and conceptual photography. I’m inspired by small moments, my friends and family, and my own experiences. I use photography to compliment my subjects and bring out their natural beauty. My favorite feeling is when a friend or family member positively reacts to a photo I’ve taken of them as I was able to make them feel beautiful about themselves. I also see my photography and filmmaking as a way to show my perspective, telling a story. The story and beauty are the main things I hope people take with them when they view my work.
Do you have any advice for other artists? Any lessons you wished you learned earlier?
I would say to be patience in your work and with yourself as it’s easy to sell yourself short early on. It took me years to develop my eye and hone in on my skills, which I don’t believe I’ll ever be totally done with. It can be frustrating when you don’t quite make what you see clearly in your head, but with time and experience, you can achieve great work. Additionally, I wish I would have started bringing my camera (or whatever medium you use!) with me everywhere I go sooner. It’s a great way to practice and you never know what you’ll see!
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
