Meet Kari Ann Shuler of Kari Does Makeup in Fort Worth

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kari Ann Shuler.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have always found makeup fascinating. The endless possibilities of temporary transformation interested me at an early age, but it wasn’t until I took a stage makeup class at Texas Christian University while I was studying Radio/TV/Film that I realized how truly amazing makeup is. By learning how to manipulate the structure of the face with product, I absolutely fell in love with the artistry aspect of makeup. Eleven years later, I am still so in love with my craft, but I also find so much joy establishing relationships with women and helping them to both look and feel their absolute best.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Life of a makeup artist is definitely rewarding, but it hasn’t always been easy. My first few years after graduating from TCU were spent working for employers in the salon industry who truly wanted me to grow and thrive. They saw my talent and wanted me to succeed. I worked as much as humanly possible, touched as many faces as I could, and did my best to impact women’s lives in a positive way. It wasn’t until 3 years ago when I worked for a woman who had zero grasp on how to run a business or how to treat clientele and employees that I knew it was time for me to venture out on my own as a full time self-employed artist.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Kari Does Makeup – what should we know?
I specialize in beauty makeup and makeup for weddings and special occasions but I am best known for airbrushing foundation and ensuring a flawless 12+ hour wear on my clients. The women I have the pleasure of doing makeup on typically rave about how they can fall asleep in my makeup application and still look fabulous at brunch the next day. Granted, sleeping in your makeup isn’t something I recommend, but I am thrilled to have the continued feedback that my application endures through the longest and most emotional of days! My ultimate goal is for women to feel like the most beautiful version of themselves when leaving my studio — if I can achieve that while having a bulletproof makeup application last through the Texas heat, I call that a win.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
If it weren’t for my friends (and amazing hairstylists), Mauricio Gutierrez and Isha Meshaal, I wouldn’t have had the guts to officially “go out on my own.” We refer each other clients, work incredibly well together as a team and have known each other in the industry for over 5 years. Their continued support have made them the best cheerleaders! Also my parents have always been SO proud of me, even before I truly knew what I wanted for my own career path. They’ve never let me doubt myself and instilled in me an unparalleled work ethic. Also, my parents have multiple copies of every magazine that I’ve ever been published in — making my parents proud makes me feel truly successful.
