Today we’d like to introduce you to Kat Scheurer.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Kat. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I graduated from Texas Tech University with a BS and MS degree in Nutritional Sciences in 2009. Upon completion of her studies, Kat gained diverse experience from employment at several reputable organizations. While living in the Dallas area, I began my career working for the Baylor Scott & White Health Care system assessing and educating adults in need of nutrition therapy for rehabilitation, diabetes, heart disease and more. Eventually, I fostered a knack for working in Pediatrics which led me to Children’s Health Dallas in 2011. While at Children’s, I developed an expertise in general pediatrics with varying diagnoses including diabetes, kidney disease, heart disease and transplantation.
Applying this varied background, I joined the team at Eating Recovery Center of Dallas in 2015, where I focused on treating adult and adolescent eating disorders in the inpatient, partial and outpatient setting. Upon moving to Fort Worth with my husband in 2017, I decided to open Retroactive Health. Being in a new town and not knowing many people, I was lucky enough to open my practice within Girls to Women & Young Men’s Health and Wellness (GTW/YM) which is an integrated, multidisciplinary health care clinic.
In addition to opening Retroactive Health, my passion for fitness led me to receiving my certification in personal training from the American Council on Exercise (ACE) in March of 2018. I currently offer personal training and nutrition counseling at Pop’s Gym which is a boutique-style gym in Fort Worth near TCU.
Has it been a smooth road?
It’s a lot of work and I would not say it’s been a smooth road at all but it’s been fun. I’m constantly learning! I’ve only been in private practice for 2.5 years and I learn something new everyday whether its business-related, something a client has taught me or something nutrition or fitness related that I’ve read. The biggest challenge has been starting a business in a town where I really didn’t have many connections. It’s important for other healthcare professionals to know who you are before they send their patients/clients to you. So, networking has been a big part of my growth (personally and from a business standpoint). I am thankful for the team at GTW/YM Fort Worth, Pop’s Gym and the therapists and physicians who have sent me clients. I would not be where I am today without them and I look forward to continuing to grow!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Retroactive Health – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I offer nutrition counseling to those struggling with eating disorders, disordered eating, heart disease, IBS, diabetes and/or those just wanting to learn how to obtain and sustain a healthy lifestyle. My goal is to provide individualized nutrition counseling to better equip clients with the tools needed to reach their goals. Something that I value very strongly about what I do is that I take a non-diet approach with my clients and focus on the whole person. We live in a world where you can’t go a day without diet culture sending you messages that makes us feel like we aren’t doing enough exercise or we aren’t thin enough or we lack willpower. What I emphasize with my clients is the importance of listening to your body, engaging in healthy exercise and not allowing shame or guilt influence the decisions you make about food. In turn, I find that clients are able to improve their relationship with food as well as their body image and achieve their goals while doing so.
What sets me apart from others: my certification in personal training, in conjunction with nutrition counseling, allows me to focus on the whole person (physical and mental health). Also, I bring my Boston Terrier Rufo to work every day!! His favorite things to do are sleep in the client’s laps, play with his toy squirrel, go on walks and just overall improve the emotional well-being of my office mates and clients.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
My favorite thing about Fort Worth is it’s a big city with a small-town feel. The people are kind and welcoming. Honestly, there really isn’t anything negative to say about Fort Worth (unless someone who works at Nordstrom is reading this – then I would really like for a Nordstrom to open here).
