Today we’d like to introduce you to Kate Thompson.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
When I graduated from high school in 2016, I knew that I wanted to do something creative with my future. My family and I contemplated with which type of school would best fit me. If I wanted to learn graphic design, a business degree, just get my basics done and figure it out from there, etc…
I found myself every night of my senior year watching YouTube videos of how people would put on their make-up and turn into a different person. I was so intrigued that I began to follow along. Learning how to make your lips look “bigger” or how to make your nose look “smaller”. I eventually fell in love with turning myself into zombies or monsters from scary movies.
I asked my family if we could possibly do some research on make-up schools. They were very supportive of me and helped me find some schools that were highly recommended on the internet.
We found Make-Up Designory in Burbank, California and I immediately fell in love. My family and I took a week-long vacation to California and took a tour from the school. Although I was only 19 at the time, my family had enough faith in me and my determination to send me off to California.
Please tell us about your art.
My art takes me in many different directions. I have been able to work on movies and tv productions. I have been blessed to be a part of bride’s big days. When I am able to do runway work, I love to be able to turn the designer’s vision into a reality.
The scope of my work also includes special effects. I especially love moulage make-up. The ability to create a realistic situation for disaster drills personally gives me such a rush and makes me love what I do. No matter what make-up I do my main hope is to help everyone I meet feel like they are putting their best face forward. To make someone feel like a beautiful model or a rotting zombie reignites and reaffirms that I have chosen my right career path.
Given everything that is going on in the world today, do you think the role of artists has changed? How do local, national or international events and issues affect your art?
The world of make-up and fashion has been and forever be changing and innovating. The times have changed, but the role of the artists has stayed the same. No matter what medium an artist preforms in, the value has not changed. All mediums of art are meant to be timeless.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
You can find my work and contact information on my website, www.katemua.com. The best way to support my artistry is word of mouth! If you or anyone you know needs a make-up artist, you could send them my website.
I am looking to get connected with brides, photographers, any CERT teams that are doing disaster drills, and anyone who is getting ready for this fall season with haunted houses.
