Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathryn Young.
Hi Kathryn, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I love to tell people my story started as soon as I learned to talk, Haha! I have very early memories of my parents telling me stories of how they would constantly find me using my own resources to do whatever it took to help people win. This simple practice of servant leadership towards others led me to discover my own life’s purpose.
My life’s purpose is simple – I’m on a mission to influence humanity to treat people like people. So, in order to complete this mission I decided to enter the helping professions as a mental health professional.
I believe that the true value in my professional relationship with my clients is found in my commitment and ability to keep my personal biases in check by reminding myself that me, my partner, my parents and/or my children are only a story away from experiencing the same hardships.
Life experiences have proven to be the best teacher in my life and I have dedicated my career to encouraging those around me to share their stories in hopes that others can learn from them as well.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road to achieving your dreams is long and filled with uncertainty every step of the way. We try and fail; some quit, and some endure and keep pressing on despite setbacks and misfortune. My journey hasn’t been any different.
In fact, all of my current wins in life are a direct result of a hard reset made in the trajectory of my life in 2019. I was living a life and following a path that no longer served the best version of me so I decided to trust God and leap. Life had finally given me the best chance possible at using my own professional practice skills of helping clients to see themselves as resourceful, resilient, and adept within themselves even when they are in adverse conditions.
So, I moved back to America after living in Japan for 6+ years with nothing but 3 boxes of belongings and started working full-time towards pursuing my clinical social work license and creating a new life for me and my daughter.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I love this question! I have the blessed opportunity to work as the Chief Operations Officer at a Detroit-based social tech company called “Inpathy” that is the perfect marriage of my life’s work in mental health and my desire to innovate and problem solve.
Inpathy is gearing up to reinvent social media to inspire transparency, normalize moods, and recreate the human experience. It’s no secret that the current state of social media is causing adverse effects to our overall well-being.
I am most proud of Inpathy’s work to stop people from obsessively comparing their everyday life with everyone else’s carefully curated versions of their lives. I call this comparison problem a “Socially Transmitted Disease” – an illness we all currently suffer from when using social media.
Inpathy will be the future of social media.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
There would be no success without my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ – in fact, my faith is what sustains me throughout the uncertainties of life. My “mini-boss” – aka, my daughter – is the best part of me and reminds me every day that every hope and dream is worth the work!
I have the most genuine and kind-hearted Mom; and the world’s wisest and supportive Dad. I also work for the best Founder/CEO on the planet, Ziarekenya Smith of Inpathy, who inspires me every day and pushes me to become the best version of myself possible.
